Jan...Isn't he about to get on skurf (or however you spell it)? Sorry to disappoint, but it's one of the few things I did do out on that pile of sand of yours. By the way, the extra weight looks good on you. Skinny gnomes just look scary.

I hope you checked his knot Jan, would hate to lose the old grandpa to a senior moment. I know I want people to check my knot and I'm still a kid.
Bob does not look 65? Grecian formula keeps him looking young and desirable.

looks like i found frumy's wasp nest today--heading uphill and to the right from lieback flake area--maybe 40-50 yards, and i'm in deep grass and they're all over me. 8-9 stings and man, it's dangerous running downhill.

my stings come to an even dozen and they itch like hell.
this wasp nest is a REAL HAZARD. i'm thinking of posting a notice on the bulletin board there.
yes, i would tend to agree they're wasps, not africanized bees--they had that yellow jacket look, out of the corner of my eye--which is closing up today. i found them in deep grass--apparently ground-nesting.

I ran the lawn mower over a ground nest in my backyard as a wee lad. Those f*#kers was not happy. took me a bit to figure out was happenin. I thought the mower was kicking up stones or may-bee I ran over a stick. Many stings on my legs had me running with my tail between my legs inside to mommy, crying all the way. I took some meds and spent the next few hours almost passing out. Oh yeah, I was allergic to bee's then, although that seems to have changed as I grew up.
We also had some old wine barrels on our front porch growing up. A cork was missing on one and every summer honey bee's would move in. They would form crazy swarms on the front, and there would be a cloud of bees flying to and from the near by crab-apple trees. As boys often do my friends and I would f*#k with that nest to no end. Not something I'm proud of, but hey that's what growing up is about. We used to have one person stick the hose in, while another turned it on, then we would both sprint half a block away imagining a killer swarm was about to engulf us. Other times we would like a smoke bomb and try to chuck it in the hole. Looking back I'm amazed at the staying power of those bees. They got angry, but nothing we did ever drove them off, guess there was too many cracks in that old barrel to hold any water. Finally I think my parents sealed up the hole, or got rid of the barrel. Looking back it sure was neat to have them around.
Matt
P.S. Don't be dumb and throw rocks at the bee's like Largo!

catching chipmunks was my youthful indiscretion--stood guard around their entrance holes with cages and put the garden hose in another hole. i caught one alright, and he fanged me squarely between the thumb and forefinger. our small town doc had to decide whether rabies shots were in order. we decided no, and fortunately nothing transpired.
meanwhile, trying to develop some empathy here for pyro's insect friends ...

I hear where Pyro is coming from -- the Bee's on the back wall have been there for decades & have taken many a beating they didn't deserve ---- BUT THOSE FRICKEN WASPS are another thing. Those dudes have been given out wiping after wiping all summer & fall.

i'm wondering now whether the two might be related--a longtime presence of bees removed and now these gangster wasps taking over. "there goes the neighborhood."
i talked to a fella at a party last night who works for parks & rec. stony is one of many properties the city likes to pretend it doesn't own. it doesn't surprise me that the hollywood crowd is moving in. they don't have to pay fees, which they'd ordinarily do at other venues, and it seems now they can commit environmental outrages for their short-term convenience. when i was there the other day, there was a whole crew moving in to do some sort of advertising shoot. one guy was carrying a whole wardrobe--a regular closet-pole of outfits for the bimb. the makeup artist had a huge cosmetics kit. "there goes the neighborhood."

Tony the city does not own Stoney Point -- & the hollywood crowd isn't moving in. More than 1000 movies have been shot in the area starting around 1925.
& the worst damage to stoney come in the early 1990's when big name climbers were paid to tell a film co. that it was ok to paint the boulders at Stoney Point.

the city does own stony, frumy. it likes to pretend it doesn't, but it does. as i understand, however, it IS collecting fees from the hollywood crowd. it just doesn't care if these people destroy beehives.
btw, i see someone was recently compelled to paint whiskers and so forth on the lion's head boulder. somehow, it just doesn't come across as art.

Actually It's a land grant with string.
The Porter Ranch Co. does not pay taxes on it & the city of L. A. can not touch it. The Porter Ranch Co. has the right to develop the property if the city tries to sell or develop the property.
Griffith Park is under the same type of land grant.
In the early 1980's under Mayor Bradley started to charge $1.00 to enter the park. The Griffith family took the city to court & Mayor Bradley had to give all the money collected to charity & remove the toll houses or lose the park.
