Instant deflation.
Gnome,
I have made intense efforts here to improve this thread. I sense no help coming from your direction.
Say straight out what you like or not about the detail, wihtout the mystopud stuff. I think it's ART and you can kiss MY ass if you object or wonder about whether it belongs here. If I'm misreading, it's your own fault, sir.
90% of the things you have garbled/said, not just here, either, should have been stifled.
So STFU.
There's not a damn thing wrong with showing human beings roasted, either.
You make it very hard to conduct business when all you can do is manage a few ad hoc comments of little merit and don't add anything AT ALL remotely edifying or educational.
If all you're gonna do is put up Dead videos, please go away.
Seriously.
I can't control you, of course. YOU, on the other hand, are old and gray enough to understand that this is a free thread, and I, as the curmudgeon who runs this crazy thread, can only cajole you and encourage you to stop being such an irritant. I'm sorry if you get butthurt, amigo. I needed to say this gently.
I could have said, but refrained:
"Dude, you so pitted, you should be stuffed in a jar of cocktail olives, man.
You so pitted, you look like you been in a sandstorm for days.
You so pitted, you look like Brad on a bad hair day...the big Spanish kind."
Welcome to Doing Dozens for Breakfast, folks.

Atom & Eve - likes attract?
Mucho gratis!
Die nagel.
Has anyone ever justified the use of 1's and 0's vs -1's and 0's?
IBM’s researchers found a way to magnetize individual atoms of the rare earth element holmium and use the two poles of magnetism...as stand-ins for the 1s and 0s. The holmium atoms are attached to a surface of...magnesium oxide, which holds them in place, at a chilly 5 kelvin (-450°F). Using essentially what is a very...small needle, the researchers can pass an electrical current through the holmium atoms, which causes their north and south poles to flip, replicating the process of writing information to a traditional magnetic hard drive. The atoms stay in whatever state they’ve been flipped into, and by measuring the magnetism of the atoms at a later point, the scientists can see what state the atom is, mirroring the way a computer reads information it’s stored on a hard drive...IBM says the researchers used a single iron atom to measure the magnetic field of the holmium atoms.

zBrown, that is fascinating and all, but can you tell me, will this technology work with my current (haha) transformers?
Gnome, if nothing else, you are a bona fide "sport" for eliminating those.
I thank you and Leslie thanks you.

When the Stars Gave Up Their Light Bushman, I bow to your excellent wordsmithing.
Thank you.
I think stars give their light to us to remind us of eternity. And they stay their courses to remind us that there are those larger designs and those smaller designs we may not be able yet to see. And the very best place I've every watched the stars was in the Winds.
We live in a culture addicted to materialism. I wish more people were happier living more simply. This hierarchical culture conditions people against simplicity.
I congratulate you on stating it very poignantly. Bravo!
Thank you.

Thank you Feralfae,
Writing about nuclear holocaust is never a fun thing but my passion to see our civilization evolve beyond annihilation (which I think we are capable of though it's not guaranteed) is such that I feel compelled to write about these scenarios. Speaking of materialism, I work a lot more hours these days because I am trying to prepare myself for eventual retirement, but at the same time I believe in the quality of living now and try to fit in as many family activities, holidays, entertainment, hobbies, and time for exercise and some reverie as well.
So I find myself at times burning the candle at both ends, which speeds up time exponentially, and therefore leaves little time for writing, which I attempt to do before bed or in the wee hours of the morning when I can't sleep. Poem ideas often come to me when I'm in a semi conscious state (a little peek into one person's subconsciousness). My major hope for humanity is that we would achieve a Star Trek type civilization in the next thousand years and travel to the stars. But the present course of human activity is so dire that these wishes for human growth and progress appear skeptical.
Ever the optimist, I shall continue to state my case about the seriousness of our situation, with a hope that we find inspiration to move forward in a sane and healthy manner. Along with my dreams of a fantastic future for our progeny and generations to come I must state that I have always believed that the study of science is wonderful, if applied with reason while placing a foremost priority towards the preservation for our environment, and with these considerations in mind, it could continue to vastly improve our life experiences.
Also what Gnome said, in so many words, teach your children well.

PS
Please share with those of us who may not already know, Feralfae, how you acquired such an interesting name or avatar.
Note; I hope all this doesn't come off too squirrelly sounding, I've been sick as a dog at work this week and not sleeping well these past few nights either.

Bushman, I hope you feel much better soon.
I agree that we need to go to space. I think it may be a case of Manifest Destiny, to at least inhabit more of our solar system. I did a tiny bit of insignificant work on the Stanford Torus a long time ago, and there are still people working on this concept, which I find absolutely feasible if we can get government out of the way.
We used to hold meetings at the Adler Planetarium, and there was a list of volunteers (many already with NASA or with one of its prime contractors) who wanted to throw their "lives, fortunes and sacred honor" into the cooperative community for a spot on the residents' list and a share of the interior surface of the torus. And there are also other space colony configurations such as Dyson Spheres.
We are going to need to learn to work together cooperatively in groups who do not have a strong need for such a stratified, hierarchical corporate structure, and where the adventurers/investors will probably most all be along for the project. Yes, we are going to need to learn the first nursery rule: Stop Fighting! :) (At least long enough to talk more with each other, for goodness' sakes!)
We need a moon/space colony, even if we are mostly mining and stockpiling material until a mass driver for off-shipping is built. (I have put a few hours of thought into this concept already, of course. There is also a lot online.)
*And now, landing from the stars, or at least the moon, and back to fairy dust...
Feral: 1(especially of an animal) in a wild state, especially after escape from captivity or domestication. (Oxford Dictionary)
Fae: Origin Middle English (denoting fairyland, or fairies collectively): from Old French faerie, from fae, ‘a fairy’, from Latin fata ‘the Fates’, plural of fatum (see fate). Compare with fay.
Origin Late Middle English: from Old French fae, faie, from Latin fata ‘the Fates’, plural of fatum (see fate). Compare with fairy.
You see, Fae, or spelled Fay, is a family middle name going back to Scotland and the Scottish French who married in to the family. I have an Aunt * Fay and a Cousin named John FitzHugh Fae *. It is a very common middle name among the women, more a second middle name among the men. The earliest woman in our family to have that name was French, and married in to the Scots. Fae. :) It is not one of my names. I have another common family name, though.
So, I am a wild fairy, once a mild-mannered institutional math wonk who turned away from the regimentation and went back to my art. There are few people more feral than artists.
It have been snowing here since dawn. It is beautiful, and the trees are sporting little snow caps on the cluster tips of the ponderosa. It is a beautiful evening.
Has anyone heard from Mouse today? The last email note I have from him was rather cryptic. So I hope some of you have talked to him lately. I know he has a VA appointment tomorrow.
Peace and Light,
ff
