love that shuggie otis tobia. can almost feel the flex in the pick coming off those strings so clean. interesting what you said upthread about regarding willie dixon and your start with the blues. my first awareness (other than radio play like ray charles) was the hammond b3 sound of jimmy smith. had a jr. high wresting partner, we would break long enough to flip the LP, then back at it. not so down tempo as this, but the right era, like '63

About a year ago (364 days) I posted this picture of my friend Gary, when I learned he had some type of tumor attached to his brain.
His battle is over. Rather than saying he lost a battle with brain cancer (glioblastoma), I believe he was victorious in the daily warfare waged within ourselves. He was more prepared for both life and death than anyone I have ever known.
I have known Gary since I was a small child. Not always the best of friends (he used to drive me nuts "preaching" to me); but somwone who turned out to one of the most loved people in my life in recent years.
In his brother's words about the last hours of Gary's life:
We watched a Harris county sunset together. From where we sat, green pastures, the still waters of our pond, trees in full foliage, and the house that Gary lived in before he became ill were visible.
We think that Gary saw the sunset. His eyes were sleepy but open and the evening light was strong. If he did, it was his last in this world.
And we can only imagine what sort of sunrise greets him this morning.

^Be my guest.
The songs are forever, sadly, friends don't last that long.

Thanks zb, Nita and t*r.
I am going out to their farm today to do some work on their farm (getting ready for honey collection from beehives). Gary's older brother, Levi (I have never called him by his first name) is my best friend on this earth. He is a musician, a brother and a saint wrapped into one. He is the one that my heart is weary for because I have never seen a bond such as the one between brothers such as Levi and Gary.

Gary will be buried next to this chapel; which is on their farm. It is over 200 years old. It was originally located in Mobile, Al and attended by Levi's grandparents. It was dismantled and reassembled on their farm in Harris County and is exactly as it was 200 years ago, with an old pump organ, wood burning stove and candle power for light.

The pond that Gary watched the sunset over for the last time is the scene of my baptism in June 2008. Levi performed my dunking.

I listened to this song for years before my baptism. I have seen many such baptisms in my life; merely passing by when out in the rural areas of GA, AL, MS and LA. I used to scoff at them; and scorn (to myself) the people for taking part.
