At breakfast this morning, speaking with Eric and Dennis, I hear the dam on Mariposa Creek, a major flood control project placed there by the Corps of Engineers in the fifties, has been over-topped by all the sudden rain.

http://goldrushcam.com/sierrasuntimes/index.php/news/local-news/8940-flash-flood-warning-issued-for-southwestern-mariposa-county-and-east-central-merced-county-as-mariposa-dam-overtops

Mariposa County contains three major drainage basins: the Merced River, Chowchilla River/Fresno River, and a localized cluster of streams of the east valley known as the Lower Mariposa group of streams....

At the lower end of the watershed, Mariposa Creek is dammed by the Mariposa Creek Dam (88 feet (27 m) high). The Mariposa Public Utilities District (MPUD) operates the Stockton Creek Dam (95 feet (29 m) high) on Stockton Creek, a tributary of Mariposa Creek.

Would you please pass the guillllotine?

Woodrow was (still is) my father's name and that's what I believe people called him, except that his name was actually George and some folks called him Woody.

He was a wise man (still is?) and a judge and he told me "you have to learn to control your temper".

Temper fidelis, mis amigos.

Pre-addendum. Wasn't that Guthrie fellow named Woodrow too?

Yesterday I thought to my elf, it's too bad I can't get out into the Rural Areas of this Middle Earth of mine.

The elf came through.Based on the reported flooding, when the Rev showed up at about two p.m. in the alley below and revvin' to go (some Where, any Where) for a cruise on a day of Partly Clouds, I suggested the south county, Planada to Le Grand on the Santa Fe, or out Le Grand Rd. and into the Raynor Ranch lands on Raynor Ranch Rd.

There are some bridges out that way if we could not get to the dam on Mariposa Creek, called Mariposa Creek Dam in the literal and unimaginative manner of the Army Corps.

I pulled us over at the fire station in Le Grand because there was a good possibility the way was flooded; it was, according to a boss of one of the two Mount Bullion CYA crews who were standing around looking at sandbags they'd filled.

First thing the crew boss said, "No pictures of these men."

I really laughed inside, smiled at him, and went along with it for the moment. I knew we'd be back.

This was not an epic ride, but a slow and stately progress. It took less than two hours but we had enough time to jaw plenty as we slid through the scenery while the sun hid behind Scattered Clouds (above them, actually).

I got Jeff to stop once so I could get pix of one scene. He'd spied some old blue bed frames - you know the kind - that looks like you could MAYBE make some Things from them. Jeff's a known packrat, opportunist, scarfer, and tinker-welder-feller, so he was really only stopping to snatch them, but I used the oppo and got, meh, some more shots of Photosynthesis in Action.

You goat to love chlorophyll out there on the plains, because there is nothing which is not green or earthy tones.

WATER, WATER EVERYWHERE
AND THAT'S A COW, I THINK

I had a great time, I had a hard time with the sunlight, so changeable, but I came home with over 400 shots taken at around 30-35 mph, many of them, and more like 20-25 on the more gnarly sections of paved...no dirt roads were taken, as Jeff's truck was the cleanest it will ever be, having been rain-soaked most every day up at Camp Runamucka, where the men are all ex-climbers, the women cook like Martha Stewart, and the pines are all dead, awaiting the saw.

I thanked him for washing the windshield, too. He was proud of that. Every man in America, and every woman, too, is deserving of that, along with shined shoes and a good haircut. (Or is it a tank of gas? The gas, of course...maybe we could push through a haircut amendment SOON, now that DuckTail is stylin' in the Oval O.)

I've got a Woodrow to live up to, in my past,
Woody along With Richard made it their business to get in my way.
Be an obsticals, keep me down, or point out my humanity as a weakness.

As to this marching toward a fascist state:

This régime, a white supremist's dream
With the pussy grabber 'n thief
Acting puppet in the power seat.
Has risen to live by - (and kill free speech)
The saying;
to those who are given plenty,
plenty is required to keep it.
All is fair to make sure not to loose.

So I'll screw the weakest out of pennies cause that adds up .
I'll steal all the wealth from the ones fool enough
to think we took power to help them grow their own
private wealth? I'll make it all "privatized"
Everyone with less 3 million $ cash, will pay
I'll take a million dollars and let you do whatever you want.
Pollute your water you can buy it from a trump tap.
I'll make claims and insist my lies are truths
I'll shove an unfair draft on you then
Doom a generation to death and war.

SAME AS IT EVER-WAS? Not since Austria/Germany in 1933
Learn history or be doomed. . . . ! ! To repeat it
.

Thanx as always for the tunes,
Stay dry as a codger in a rocking chair on a porch in the Kentucky hills when the bourbon dam broke. The swill made the ditch weed grow. ,,
( I've, linked that tragedy before ? )

ROLL THE SNAP DICE:
oow! That's nice!

Then I've got to begging for the wife to re-size anything of the 250 snaps in the drive

( down from thar same 400-455 snaps, the camera svcks worse than the eyes behind it )

But

We got Gnomette a real camera !

I hope to share some snaps . . . . .

The thing was an absolute deal, all white body in the exact frame and size as an old Pentex SLR, but all modern hard ware & three level stabilized automatic settings as well as fully manual, old skool settings too.

Teams of oxen hauled lots of cargo up and down the verge of the mountains through this land back in the 1850s and on. The terminus at Stockton fed the mines and farms down to Millerton north of Fresburg. The trail itself is still discernible, they say, but not if you haven't any access on what is private land. The road was located here on the base of the western slope to avoid the flooding in the plains while being below the varying snow line.

If we had more time, we would have taken Preston Road and gained some height, but the Rev called it good some Where Out There past the old Raynor Ranch a few miles.

It's too bad, too. I was slightly shocked to hear Jeff had never driven out this way before. We saw no wildlife like coyotes, nor eagles, both of which like this area. The doves tend to stay higher up in the hills than where we went, but there were lots of small birds, including blackbirds.

I'd like to say to Marlow that you might enjoy driving through this area where the view is not 100% obstructed by Norwegian Woods. Hope you're enjoying this tour, even though we cannot manage your Scandinavian Standard of Wetness.

There are snakes, however. Glad you like, Marlow.

We came to Dutchman Creek and went only a little beyond, a mile or less, and Jeff decided to turn around. We nearly made it to Preston Road. I'd have loved that, as I would have had to get out and mind the cattle gates, thereby having a chance to shoot pix out of the cab of the truck! Not to be, though, and the Pilot ranks the Navigator. Preston's dirt road for the whole shebang, so the rig stayed pretty clean.

hooblie, I was hoping for some mud, dude.

Boomer used to sing a song he made up about BroMike's winter pastime, duck shooting.

Out on Sandy Mush Road
Looking for some mud hens
Gonna get some snipes
And some mallards, too

Maybe find some mushrooms
Cook 'em up together
Duck-duck Michael,
Yer in my sights!

This place reeks of abounding fairy folk, feralfae!

We have been backing down since we first took up climbing, so nothing new for us.

The Journey is the Reward.Must be the rush hour.
William Gwin was one of the first two senators elected from California, the other being John Fremont. Ironically, the post office at Fremont's homestead was named in honor of his colleague, who was a flagrant sympathizer of the Southern Cause. Once the Union had secured the loyalty of California, the US botherment stopped calling it Gwin.
Back on the 140. It's been fun. Glad you could come along.

Tales from the Vienna Campfire

The Call of the Naked Buck had a then-scandalous description of "ardor."
It was a 19th C. poem about the meaning of the phrase 'buck naked.'

In it, a magic horn was being blown, though whose horn, for how long, and the cost were left obscure by the anonymous poet.
Some musicologists insist it is a riff borrowed from Mozart - KV 620 - Die Zauberflöte.

I wrote it over there but new. So knew on the chance, that you were half holding off?
Here is where it was always aimed for
On Thanksgivings and Easters, all those long weekends before teenage freedom,The family unit went to Conneticut. Loyd Stiusny, an Eagle Scout, who split for Alaska in '77 the oldest brother of three 2nd generation children, his two sisters and he were only separated by three years. While Mamma Ruthie was from, Saskatchewan, Jack(badazze'd Dad) was 1st gen American, ex Tenth Mnt, he saw to it that we went climbing. Loyd, now, twice married and living a second father-hood, we have only spoken at those high's and lows of Family get togethers; Births weddings and funerals.
In that far-ago and long-away, there were no trees on these hillsides. You'd never guess what hides behind the trees
That fine, hi-grade for hillside chossWith heavy snow, It ices nice tooSo Not all that sapling growth, had to go.
Edit: suddenly, as proud as I am of my Bushman ways and hard work, I decided that y'all know what a hack job looks like,
