Johann Strauss II ~ Feuilleton, op. 293

Yesterday, on a whim, I purchased a used copy of The Little Book by Selden Edwards.
I had forgotten that I had already read it, but when I started into it, I realized there was much I had missed.
Edwards' style of humor is Tom Robbins-like.
The protagonist is a Central Valley boy with a lightning fast ball who is transported in time to la Belle Epoque in Vienna.
"...would say alluringly, "a whole glorious way of life teetering on the edge of the abyss, totally oblivious to its own nearness to extinction. But what splendor!"

Afternoon Fooly Toon
I drank one glass of Merlot yesterday
while out on the prowl
but it was too cold to enjoy it al fresco.
Abandoning the fountain outside
and its merry murmured accompaniment
for the interior of a Monday-afternoon
palace of refreshment
which was abandoned by others
and left to me and me alone
I was the only person there;
and so I pulled out my book
and read of the days of Jung Wien.
I stopped reading as the wine took effect.
I found myself now in a crowd
in the Majestic Meadow watching
what used to be the Rhombus.
It had been sculpted into the face of the Emperor.
The Emperor himself was in attendance
for this was the grand unveiling,
although we all knew whose mug was up there.
It had been a two-year project
employing climbers and artisans.
Two had been killed
and several injured.
We had been lucky.
Original plans called for the Emperor's Face
to be atop the Leaning Tower.
It was too big a project
and a "paying route."
That is, the $250/person price tag to climb it
was not too burdensome for those who wished to try.
The Rhombus, of course, was far less-traveled.
And then my angel appeared with my ticket
saying there was no rush.
I will never drink Merlot again in my life.

Mind Within unto Itself
THe writer wrote and smoked with a cough
Jaundiced lipped and smoky eyed
New Delhi Days the titled work
As Charybdis churned within his mind
Her oily voice a silent screech
Seth saw with the nightshade down
That meter lady walking by
Her golden fingernails painted by TV light
At the railroad tracks near the trailer park
Gray and Sam were huffing fuel
With Cheetos fingers and bare toes
As their pet pug wheezed in mild distress
Baby Krystal cried herself to sleep
With mother's diaper duties neglected
FTD rang the the doorbell
The gun lay on the coffee table
As tornado alerts sounded in the area
Sikhs and Navajos were commonly mistaken
For Muslims and Mexicans
As a sign of our paranoid times
In the little Southwest Community
The writer's alarm clock worked like a charm
As the cigarette burnt painfully up to his fingers
Wide awake he found the refrigerator
And sat back down again while cracking his knuckles
The keyboard rhythm was now inaudible to him

And it certainly is a good day for turtles, ducks, slugs, and decadence.
How the Rainbow Got Its Bow
Mary's hands and Joseph's finger
Tied it so the rain won't linger.
Or so said the wife of Len Singer.
Len managed the Mountain Shop Gang of '71 which was me, Andy Cox, Bob Ashworth, and Gerughty's GF named Gail.
Len's wife was a redhead and good enough to have myself and the new bride over for dinner one time.
The social whirl of Yosemite Village...so little like Vienna it is laughable.
But having Camp 4 in my recent experience, it was still a cultural event for me.
It turned out that Len was a notorious milk glugger (straight from the carton) who made her despair of his rise in the Curry hierarchy.
I don't know what became of them.
I do know Len said that we all must watch that Werner when he was in the shop.
The rurps were his main target.

Golden to the Next World
Or
(This is how I do sarcasm)
As the night gives way to dawn
Golden rays of sunshine
Illuminate the cloud tops
Ghostly, high up in the atmosphere
Why would we think it heaven?
There once was a place called Shangri-La
Far to the north was mother Russia
And just because they called it so
Never meant that much to those
Standing on the end of the barrel of a gun
If you think this is not a poem
If you think things are alright
Everything is going as planned
Everything is going to be alright
Everything is going our way
How does that sound to you?
Does it make you feel angry?
Does it make you feel sad?
Catch a flying cloud and drift away
Zoo animals are happiest when they do
Yet no one calls them prisoners
She noticed it the first time
They're safer in captivity
It's what people always say
Cough up your freedom
On a faraway planet I call home
They don't treat their parents like the next meal
Say what you want about religion
Say what you want about the world
Hanging in the balance

<quote=Gunkiemike>While I've never owned or used them, (one of the) limitations of the RBs . . . .At one point they had a 3/8 RB IIRC. If Petzl's new product worked in a 3/8" hole, . . . Metric, so... BZZZT.</quote>
There are 3/8 holes out there !
(Far from where it used to be easy to get to then & now even farther & harder. )
there were a few people who were Thinking that " RB"s were going to be a big thing.
The idea was to add a hole to protect "long unsafe, near carnage inducing falls.
I was only in on drilling one route. With three holes. I was not around for what I gather were at least a dozen one or two hole route, in '98?-'99?
5 yrs latter you could not find the 3/8th holes. In fact those responsible never went back.
One day out from a "blizzard" where 10-12 inches of snow are forecast, We'll see?
with record high temps predicted for the next 24 hours. 64* in February ?
Maybe ~ if the sun gets through the overcast?
3:45 am
I can't sleep, a thousand thoughts a minute crash around my head like the whole emoji page
In scroll fashion on the screen of my mind.Like it says, climber out of bed, I descend a hole where stairs man the gap turn on the light settle into a not-to blown desk chair.
It is then that I instinctively grabbed the main addiction and pushed a button. Not just nothing happened, all the lights in this cinder block n slab chamber, went out !
In the dark I stew. . .
Ssoooo. . . What to do ,. ,. ,.whats to be done?
The predicament,
I've not, it seems blown a fuse or Tripped a breaker on a panel - this won't be that sort of a quick painless fix .
The night-mare: ~ o, . this is how re-models start. The dreaded Stupid home-owner tricks! Knowing what the medium is - IS always a good start. slapped with 60s adhesives and pasted to the cement cinder block wall it is also vintage 60s wood paneling! The junction boxes mistifieyed me over a dozen years ago, but I've just kept my fingers crossed.
Now - I'm not any sort of handy, I've no space, no tools it is disgraceful! After having
Cob-jobbed for years in an actual 'money pit' once known as Sand Hill Farm, where we had every energy source and savings idea used or abused (wood heat, Geo-thermal, & solar positioning, solar generated battery, standard electric & propane heat / hot water /cooking.
We had it set up so when the mice peeped the urea gas generated poisin gas for fumigation
We had a climber, who built highway on ramps, lay in van size blocks of blue stone - stacked up to 8-10 feet high ,75 long along the hillside the house was built into.
Now?.
I'm stuck in an electric sandbox without a net or A generator.

[A] most important feature is the analysis of the information that comes your way. And that's what I don't see enough of in this world. There's a level of gullibility that leaves people susceptible to being taken advantage of. I see science literacy as kind of a vaccine against charlatans who would try to exploit your ignorance.

Everything is going our way

--MFM, turned upside down
Sounds fairly confident.
However, when one realizes
that generality
is involved with the use of
"everyone,"
it falls apart immediately
to the critical thinking of
"How can he or that agency
POSSIBLY KNOW
the total of Things
or my innermost thoughts
unless that's God,
or worse,
it's ME thinking that
I'M GOD
[this one again? - thought I'd banished that one]
and that sure ain't so
On balance,
I'd say it makes me feel ambivalent,
neither happy nor sad,
take what comes,
don't bitch too loudly,
smile blandly,
keep your eyes unfocused,
and breath regularly.
Maybe it'll just go away.
ANOTHER POEM, PROBABLY
