John Coltrane ~ My Favorite Things
Perhaps two of the most recognizable jazz tunes around; both mesmerizing.
Brubeck's tune popularized 5/4 time with jazz composers and brought jazz out of the dark, late night inner city into the daylight.
Coltrane took the un-cool soprano saxophone and covered a song from a Broadway musical on his album Giant Step and jazz was never the same. From there to the tenor saxophone and with it Coltrane put the hammer down on improvisation and abstract creativity. No telling what we would be hearing if he lived past 40.

@Tobia:
I've listened to Coltrane and Brubek, but not alot. Thanks for your insights into the jazz world. I guess someone who appreciates mariachi music should develop an appreciation for more subtle themes.
This isn't Willie and the Handjive and certainly not Help Me Rhonda, but surfers used to pretend to dig it.

t*r, i did my six month internship after i graduated from college at the VAWLA hospital & wished i would have taken them up on their offer of a job when i finished. i have never worked in a hospital or rehab invironment with so much respect and care for the patients. they may have lacked in certain areas, but certainly not in love & respect. i recall telling one aging veteran(whom i had been assigned/working with on a special project)who we were sending home for the last time "If it wasn't for you, we wouldn't be here." and i thanked him. He gave me a quizical look, and said "Oh, you mean because, we are getting sick and...!" I said, "No! Because of what you did for the freedom of the whole world, long ago!"
