What! Riley is going to hijack this into a climbing thread

You wrote

When you got your wits back a few seconds after the fall it was obvious what we had to do. But your very, very first instinct after coming about as close to death as either of us ever will again, until we actually do die, was to keep going - there is no quit in Karl....zero, zip, nada! You're like a climbing Rocky Balboa!

I just knew it was getting dark and didn't quite realize just how fast we could bust outta there. I knew we were done. I just figured we might have to bivy for the night before the bail. I admit there was a first idea of "maybe my arm just smarts real bad and it will feel better in the morning" but once I saw the shape, I had to accept reality.

Now a humiliating rescue, I'd risk some skin to avoid that, despite the wisdom of it.

So about that rope, how much was cut through and how much remained? I don't want to be exaggeratin' like some conservative talkin about the evils of Obamacare when they don't understand whats on the table (just trying to get back on topic here and puzzled by what Skip meant by his Obamacare remark higher up.)

Good luck on that one...wouldn't you think republicans would be working on creating new jobs?

Obamacare needs to be repealed immediately.

The evil one

The Insurance companies love Obamacare, Good luck repealing anything that big money likes.

I could understand some Conservatives not liking the requirement to have health insurance, despite the irritation with folks who don't

What else don't you like about it?

Lois..here is just one...Insurance companies can no longer deny coverage to children based on pre-existing conditions. Before the Affordable Care Act, insurance companies could refuse to cover a child
because he or she had diabetes or other pre-existing conditions. And, if an insurer did cover a child, it could exclude coverage for the very conditions for which she needed treatment, such as her asthma or a heart defect. One year later, this practice is a thing of the past. The Administration estimates that up to 72,000 children who would otherwise be uninsured will gain coverage, and an additional 90,000 children are seeing their coverage limitations disappear because of this provision of the law. In 2014, no American will be denied coverage based on a pre-existing condition.

Another benefit... over one million children under 24 allowed to stay on parents insurance policy.

Do you have children??

Well, Karl, for openers what did it really accomplish? Now everyone must buy insurance, however, the insurance companies have no limit or cap as to what they may charge. So they charge everyone more and their profits go up. Meanwhile, we all pay more. I am not seeing the gain here. My rates went up, as a result. Just above everyone I know states that their rates went up. How did we benefit in all of this? Everyone is (supposedly) insured and now we all pay more for the insurance. What am I missing, here?

Well, the idea is that if given the option of buying or not buying insurance, healthy people opt out. This is a rational choice for an individual, but if sick people are the only ones paying for insurance then the costs will be high. Spreading the costs among healthy and sick folks should moderate it a bit.

Second, ODS is at work. I really doubt your insurance went up because of Pelosi care. The ink has barely dried on it and most provisions are not yet in effect.

Companies hire smart people that can read to anticipate and predict how the political climate and new laws will effect their business.

Pellosi and her posse of illiterates may have needed to "pass the bill to know what's in it", but the insurance companies had quantified how it would effect the bottom line before the ink was dry.

Your rates now are the direct result of Nancy's posturing and Barry's crowning legislative achievement..

Yeah sure TGT..........IF Obamacare hadn't passed , the insurance companies would have lowered their rates...

But they would not have raised them as much either.

Insurance is all about predicting future costs of claims.

Using your theory - if valid - then rates all over would have gone DOWN. They did not.

Lois, that provision is not yet in effect.

Major illness will bankrupt anyone so healthy or not-healthy, anyone with ASSETS buys insurance. The only people who buy nothing i.e. no insurance are people with nothing to lose.

Lois, many healthy people don't buy it. They don't feel they need it.

To many young adults, health insurance is an afterthought. They often don't make much money, and are generally healthy.

I understand that argument Lois.

But the fact is, everyone already pays for healthcare, just not very efficiently or equitably.

That starts to go down a slippery slope, no?

I guess we should not have a helmet law. Nor a seatbelt law.

community good is what we are after. As a society we don't want to let people die without medical care, which is why they can go to emergency rooms for free if they need to. But this has proven to not be cost effective. It is more effective if everyone buys insurance together. that is what single payer insurance is. Granted, that isn't what Obama and our congress created, but we had to start somewhere.

everyone already pays for healthcare, just not very efficiently or equitably.

bingo..

Lois says there are a bunch of high deductible policies with no questions asked. I call BS. I have a friend who pays $1300 a month for health insurance because some doc mistakenly thought he had a heart condition who would love that.

High Deductibles mean nothing if they don't ask questions. A $3500 deductible is gone in an instant if you need heart surgery. They ALL ask questions

And what party is against any type of single payer policies??? Republicans.

What party is against any type of national healthcare...republicans.

What party wants to dissolve medicare and medicaid...republicans.
