I think Woodie Guthrie wrote one about "The Washout at Tunnel 12". I could be wrong, maybe it was Loudon Wainwright

Which reminds me of Caroline's line from Little Big Man:

"I just tarred-and-feathered my own brother!"

Not that you ever deserved or NEEDED t & f-ing...it probably isn't that good a deterrent anyway. And I've often thought that it takes too much effort...first, pluck a chicken, then boil up some tar, then, careful not to burn yourself, apply the tar and then the feathers.

And who gets to clean up? Huh?

Speaking (figuratively of course)

Why spoil the ship for a ha'porth of tar?

I do not know about the feather part, but tickle your ass with some tar somehow doesn't seem to work.

This guy is a joke.

He exhibits enthusiasm, but no technique and no organization.

Of course, the object is not to burn up the ski! Keep the nozzle flow at the same spot, once you've established how much heat you need to get the tar flowing. Don't change it. Get used to it.

The windows need to be open! Ventilate or strangulate! The smell of tar bubbling is addictive, so be forewarned.

Any scraper you use should be free of burrs and sharp.

Always keep your tar flowing in one direction, beginning from whichever end, but don't reverse. Take your time, keep the nozzle the same distance from the ski all along its length.

Keep other volatiles well away from the work area (specifically GLUES, Locker...)

Use any old rag except high nylon content cloth will melt on occasion and catch fire unduly. Cotton and cotton blends are best.

Keep the radio turned up, or the TV, and have a good supply of "comestibles" and you can really party down.

Of course, no one uses wood skis now, so this is all just a dumb show for places like the Wawona History Center, or Williamsburg, where pioneer tricks are shown by the volunteers. The last wood ski I based was in 1979.
The three 'caretakers" at TM were one step up from the droogs by virtue of being on a payroll.

Trying to stick(!) to the topic at hand or which was at hand at some point.

Back in the old days when I played a lot of round ball, weight-lifting was not as common as it is today. Hence very strong players were an anomaly. Today?

I never met Julia's daughters until the mid-seventies at a parade in Groveland. My daughter was five and they all got on really well. Recently I've always tried to make it into the Museum to visit with Julia, who may well be retiring soon. She makes all feel welcome and has a rare gift that way.
It's not the best way to live, thinking of the past as much as I do, but I'm a history freak, and freaks just do what they do because it's in their nature.

Thinking about the past sometimes brings me grief and recalls sorrowful times; but then, too, I tend to appreciate the good times which come my way (fewer and fewer and further apart as I grow older) more than ever. And I appreciate words more, here lately, by far.

Magnolia Wind
Words by Guy Clark

I'd rather sleep in a box like a bum on the street
Than a fine feather bed without your little ol' cold feet
And I'd rather be deaf, dumb, and stone blind
Than to know that your mornings will never be mine

And I'd rather die young than to live without you
I'd rather go hungry than eat lonesome stew
You know it's once in a lifetime and it won't come again
It's here and it's gone on a magnolia wind

I'd rather not walk through the garden again
If I can't catch your scent on a magnolia wind

Well if it ever comes time that it comes time to go
Sis' pack up your fiddle, Sis' pack up your bow
If I can't dance with you then I won't dance at all
I'll just sit this one out with my back to the wall

I'd rather not hear pretty music again
If I can't hear your fiddle on a magnolia wind

If I can't catch your scent on a magnolia wind

You weren't even around when Washington bit the bullet against a vastly superior Attles team in '75. I was living in Berkeley at the time.

I didn't know any of this. Mr. Kerr lives up in the Berkeley Hills. He attended Pali High and graduated from Arizona State. He surfs in San Diego.

His father was murdred by the Islami Jihad in 1984. And finally, there are some real ass-holz in the world. Read the Wikipedia article.

Samir Seikaly and Ramzi Ba'labakki, editors, Quest for Understanding. Arabic and Islamic studies in honor of Malcolm H. Kerr (American University of Beirut 1991)

My friend and instructor in anthropology, Marcus Arguelles, spent time at that University in Beirut, researching old coins. He was nearly offed by a mortar shell which blew in the doors of the elevator in the lobby of one of the buildings.

He was standing at the panel punching in the code for the elevator and was spared being turned into jelly by that tiny little margin.

'Sold My Soul for a Song and a Dance'

Close calls and heartaches,
I've had my fill,
Hope I'm not done 'till I'm over the hill,

Once caught the clap,
Such an innocent girl,
She never knew what her gifts would unfurl,

I caught the pneumonia,
I should have been dead,
Drunken and rafting I wound up in bed,

Fell fifty feet,
Nearly flattened my head,
Fell twenty aplenty broke my back instead,

Totaled some cars,
Laid down some bikes,
Broke thirteen bones smoked them old Lucky Strikes,

Gave up the drinking,
The foolin around,
Should've hung on to the spirit I found,

Made a deal with the devil,
To borrow more time,
Made no sense of religion but that's all just fine,

Sold him my soul,
To live out my days,
Traded prayers for more sunsets not mending my ways,

Some people say,
I'll be sorry and sad,
But if dying's so easy it can't be that bad,

I sold my soul,
For a song and a dance,
And I'm dancing here still with my one true romance,

Close calls and heartaches,
I've had my fill,
But I might not be done 'till I'm over the hill.

Do I have to read this whole thing to find out what the interest rate is?

.??? I struck me that your list of innocent lives took by happenstance for wither or wit you could not help it one bit,
But as to thine own self do on to too much and it will catch up on you,

I played with it that line above if it was changed to be as mean spirited as could be,
Spat out at the world, not at anyone or one thing
Just piss 'n vinegar, bad wine, weak sauce, but

To thine own anus be kiss in' cause all the bad siht that you did added up , is killing you.

The first one might have been darker , harsher
WHY.???
