It's the comparison of the evolution of the 3 planets and the chain of cause and effect that brought each to it's present state. All 3 are in the zone of habitability, all have or had water, all had intense volcanism, the rotation and orbit lengths are different, only one has a moon of substantial size, only one has an exceptionally dense atmosphere, one comparably thin, and one just right-why?
Your link lead to nowhere Ed, but i've downloaded some other material which i'll look at tonight.

That's sad. Why do you insist on wallowing in negativity? It is not good for you, Rick. Life is short, too short to be so mean.

BTW Gary, you aint seen MEAN!
Hahahaha!! My mom is Irish, you'll have to shout louder than that to get my attention!
Seriously, though, I feel genuinely sorry for you, Rick. It's such a beautiful world, and you live in one of the finer corners of it, yet you are filled with envy, hate and insecurity.
Even if this is just an Internets persona you've made up, be careful, and mindful of what Buddha said:
We are shaped by our thoughts; we become what we think. When the mind is pure, joy follows like a shadow that never leaves.

You might as well reaquaint yourselves with your youth because what passes as science from your quarter is getting more incredible with each passing day.
Sure is funny to hear Rick Sumner talk about what passes for science.

YUP! Sure have. She lives in town... remember. And the "Chick/s" that are actually climbing/trail running with her say she's "ok" and all will in fact smoke your whinny internet look at me pretentious wanna-be climber ass in a second. Fact.
Good thought.
I've seen some pretty hardcore photos of both of them. We're gonna need some kind of contest. Chief, Anita and Daria.

THE CHIEF, I didn't ask about my ass getting smoked - I am well aware of my lameness and that she would in fact smoke me.
I suggested that you go climb with her so she can smoke YOUR ass, which she will undoubtedly do.
I dunno where you get that I am pretentious. I am not the one dissing PhDs like I'm some edumacated genius. did you even finish high school TEH CHIEF, or are you one of those people who claim to have attended the school of hard knocks?? *snore*

The chuff learnt everything he needed to know about academia in the Navy.
And sketch, OSU is not a "teaching" university. It is a research university. That doesn't mean they don't teach, it means they rely on professors to bring in research $. If instructors aren't publishing meaningful research and bringing in grant $, they are of little use.
Drapela was a graduate student at OSU. I know 2 people who were graduate students with him. Both went on to do research in big pharma. Drapela was at OSU for 10 years, "teaching"... it is unclear if that 10 years included his time as a graduate student (i.e. a TA) and/or post-doc, but I bet it does... which means he was likely an adjunct prof for 4 years tops.
According to his OSU page and searching the academic literature, he has 1 publication... on which he is the 3rd author. Anyone who knows academia knows being the 3rd author on 1 pub in 10 years is WEAK SAUCE and will NEVER get you a tenure position at an institution like OSU.
Fact is, he had NO clout. He was not OSU material, but I'm sure he'd do great teaching at a community college. His research did not result in publications or bring in $. They kept him on while it was convenient for them, then let him go when they didn't want him anymore. Happens all the time.
"Those who can do research, do. Those who can't, teach... until they are replaced by someone who can do research AND teach."

Man, all I want to know is if the climate is going to stay warm enough to keep The Northwest Passage navigable next year. Last year was good, this year it iced up way early.
Is it a year rotational kind of thing?

Perhaps climate change will evolutionarily force an enhanced adaptability upon the human species. Our descendants in a few hundred years may look a bit different and may be comfortable in what for us might seem an almost alien environment.

you really want to make that Passage? West to east.... probably (if sailing)...
Yes, that's a plan....except this year a number of boats got unexpectedly iced in. So now we're looking at Chilean Channel again....but I really want the Northwest Passage. Ummm. Wait a couple years?.....always dicey as we age and edge downhill in strength to carry it off without carrying more crew.

Sure, as long as the environmental forcing isn't fast enough to cause extinction. And as long as the genetic mutations aren't severe enough to render our new form incapable of persisting.
It is entirely possible... but mass extinctions seem to be far more common during periods of "rapid" environmental change (10^3 years).
