Hey Bobby,
Who ever would have thought that we'd be cheering to hear you speak. If you can say 'Mom" and "Faith", I'm sure a few of your favorite expletives aren't far behind. Can't wait to hear 'em!
The strength you and your family display is astounding. You are always on our minds.
Love,
Tom, Betty and Fritz

Great job Bobby! So happy to hear of you using your voice, just speaking out and saying Mom! I know communication has taken several forms in the past nine months, and adding your voice to the mix is wonderful. I'm also ecstatic for you about what knowing and pointing to who was in the room means for you and your family as you heal. Sending warmth and prayer, Ashley McEntire

hahahahahahahahaha: BOBBY!!!
Sorry it took me a while to post after we got the latest great news from Denver, but I think part of the reason is because I have been walking around town with a completely idiotic smile on my face ever since I heard ... I was so chuffed that I wanted to do something special that day, in honor of you, so I convinced Liz Grady to come along for a hike to Sugarloaf "Mountain" (Washingtonians have a sick sense of humour, believe you me ...). So I went to google, entered Sugarloaf Washington DC, got some smashing driving instructions and then proceeded to drive for about 2 hours and getting NOWHERE near what was supposed to be Sugarloaf. So, we did the second best thing that made us think of you and had a couple of cold ones at the terrace of a small tavern in Middleburg, which, in all honesty, was NOT too rough ... Now, I haven't told Liz this yet but I'm sure she will soon find out, when I got home I went back to Google and found the exact same driving directions that had led me nowhere so I googled some more and then found out that there are TWO bloody sugarloafs in the area!!! one in Virginia, and the other in Maryland, and of course I picked the wrong one. Now, I'm still pinning this blunder on the idiotic smile (see above) and of course when Liz confronts me about this I will deny everything ....
When I heard I also called Peg and Steve who were tickled pink at the news of your progress. Jessica's birthday is coming up next Tuesday so I am going up to Portsmouth for the week-end and, I promise, Bud, we will be thinking of you and of Jess the whole time. I also called Kim up in Canada who has also been following your progress and who is rooting for you in a major way. So of course we rejoiced, but we also looked back on all the way you have come so far, and how much Faith and your parents have been by your side, always hoping, always strong and never, ever doubting you. And then Kim said the coolest thing, namely that your parents really knew what they were doing when they named your little sister.
Welcome back Bobby, it's good to know you are there more than ever, and that you are always, always keeping up the fight. We will keep rooting for you, thinking of you, sending lots of positive vibes, hope, prayers, whatever we know is likely to help you.
And, as always, Bud, I hold you close in the back of my mind,
Charlotte
PS: now that your words are coming back, I'm going to ask Faith to check if you remember BEER!

hey there bobby... say, i foumd a link that is a "sort mountaineering map" of this "hard climb" that you are undertaking now... or, in a sense, "overtaking", as you take over this situation to get your stamina, etc, back again, to speak.... in a sense, once again, one step leads to another, and all lead to victory!
(and to you all out there, that are encouraging him, here it is)--http://www.northeastcenter.com/information_bulletin_decannulization.htm
*this may not be exactly, how it is for bobby, but involving the "talking valve" situation--the HARD WORK, is most likely similar...

Hey Bobby,
I think you'd be proud that instead of hiking that day Charlotte and I drank beers.
By the way (sorry Bobby but Charlotte won't respond to her regular email account, nor has she answered my voicemails) CHARLOTTE - did you find my water bottle and my ridiculous chihuahua's t-shirt?
Yes Bobby, I have a 4lb chihuahua named Desi Arnaz, Jr. who I hope to introduce you to someday soon so that you can unleash all sorts of Paris Hilton insults on me. And yes in winter I dress him in sweaters and fleece, but he's actually a really cool dog, I swear. Everyone comments on how friendly and non-chihuahua-like he is. For example, he did not bark, whine, or nip ankles ONCE the entire day Charlotte and I tried to find that "mountain".
Very proud of your wonderful progress Bobby - you just keep fighting. Everyone's here for you.
xxoo

Yay!!! Faith, I just sent you an email too, but in case you check this first give Bobby a huge squeeze and a big hello from us! I'll try to find a host site for the picture I just sent you so I can post it here. Dez is now six months and we'll see if we can get "Bobby" to be his first word and then those two fellows can work on their words together and race to the multi-syllable profanities. We're thinking of you guys and sending you lots and lots of love.

Update from Faith 4/15
Dear Everyone,
As always, many thanks for the continual flow of incredible support. It's
much and always appreciated.
Bobby's making great progress--gentle, steady and fluid. He's spending a
significant part of his day in a chair with therapies throughout and is also
getting lots of important rest. It's clear he's building strength and
endurance and is in need of a great deal of sleep (he's pretty much like a
lion in terms of sleeping hours). When he's fully awake, he's really
beginning to communicate what he wants through hand signals and he's working
on his voice and putting words together--in fact, he's really making
progress putting everything together.
One thing that has become clear in the past week is that Bobby tires very
quickly with visitors and often checks out when people stop by. In this
chapter of Bobby's recovery (which is really still an initial phase), he is
in the process of collecting energy--building strength and endurance--and
therefore only has a certain amount to give. This type of recovery takes a
tremendous amount of energy, so it's important that Bobby is able to channel
it into rehab. We've found that when or after there have been people
visiting, he isn't able to participate in therapy as well (or at all). While
this is not always the case, it does happen more often than not. In light of
this, we've had several conversations with the rehab team and docs and
everyone is in agreement that the amount of visits need to be toned down for
the time being--at least until Bobby builds more endurance. We've also, of
course, asked Bobby if this works for him and he's indicated that this is
what he wants as well. But because a huge (and therapeutic) part of recovery
is the support of friends and family (and we love and appreciate having
people here!) we want to be clear that we're just trying to limit the number
of visitors for the time being, but if you're in town and want to stop by
briefly (usually about 10 minutes) then please just call and we can play it
by ear and let you know if Bobby is feeling up for it. Again, our numbers
are:
Anne: 307-899-1586
Bob: 307-899-0040
Faith: 303-883-6734
Again, thank you all so much for everything!
All the very best to all of you,
Faith

Bobby, that is so wonderful that you are saying some words. Paul Ulrich (Spears) were just talking about you that other day. I just wanted to let you know that I just bought some of your photograph's from AllPosters.com. You have so many wonderful pictures on that web-site. I bought Cowboy Boots With Well Worn Spurs and Buffalo Roaming in Field. They will look great on my walls. I just wanted to let you know Beau and I are praying for you everyday. Take Care, Toma Knapp @ Beau White
P.S. Faith, I would like to send Bobby a Wyoming Cowboys t-shirt, so I need to know what size and an address to send it too. Thanks, Toma

For head injuries, neurofeedback has proven to be very effective per rehab. While still experimental, it is, I believe, indicated in Bobby's case. Definitely worth a shot.
Get well fast, caballero.
