What will talking power meters say about you?
Posted: Friday, October 9 2009 at 05:00 am CT by Bob Sullivan
What if it means that, one day soon, your auto insurance company will know that you regularly arrive home on weekends at 2:15 a.m., just after the bars close?
Given the sheer avalanche of data that is going to be generated by Smart Meters that talk back to the grid, it’s easy to imagine unintended consequences.
------- So no worries? Duh! Your Smart Meter will report the electricity
used by any lights you turn on at 2:15am, however briefly. The garage door
opener operating, etc.
---------------
So yes you are under observation by big brother as soon as they install the
Smart Meter as most everything we do requires electric power.

Those meters have nothing on facebook.
The possibility of knowing everything about us looms large

I have to say I enjoy that in the last few years we discovered that the NSA literally had the internet and phone lines from most of the major telecom companies running straight into their data centers and yet people are still coming up with "smart meters will be used to spy on you" and "the H1N1 is a trick to put microchips in your brain."

HighDesert - Don't think the NSA is as likely to share your info
with Insurance companies or the police as PGE would be.
Here's a guy who reverse engineered one of them. Said its security
was 15yrs out of date for todays hack tools. As he shows by coping the
firmware off it.

I see. So instead of fearing Big Brother government you fear Big Utility and Big Claims Adjuster.
If an auto company wanted to spy on you why wouldn't they just require you to have one of those tracking devices stuck in your care that are already commercially available and placed in all kinds of government and industry fleet vehicles?
Please keep posting this stuff though because it's always fun to see what people are thinking about.

Hope that wardriving punks do not instruct your new smart meter
to cut the power to your home Highdesert, after they hack its stupid 16bit
encryption.
