A few years later...
Cody, now 19, will be spending next fall semester in South Africa and then working for a few months in an HIV/AIDs clinic in Lesotho.

I feel blessed to have spent many hours in the outdoors with my daughter. I gave her many opportunities to climb and she'd still rather ski powder and that ok.
Climbing Powerdome, something she had wanted to do since her first trip to Courtright
Yesterday on Kaiser Peak, her 1st backcountry ski adventure, (does having Balloon Dome in the back ground make it climbing related?)

My 16 mos. girl sent the 15 ft. ladder to the top of the jungle gym at the park the other day...terrifying and exhilerating at the same time (for me that is...she wasn't fazed either way!).

Very true DMT, unless you ski at Sierra Summit, then skiing is the low budget hooker kinda cousin. I am now gonna drive my daughter to visit the low budget cousin and make her climb at Tollhouse on the way home (I'm trying to give her some class).

I've climbed with a few daughters (none of my own, they were borrowed) and liked it. one 12 years old gal had thise real calmness abut her, she (thanks ato a GREAT dad) was doing trad like it was just the normal way to climb, no big eal, just her aving fun placing that tricam, very pleaseant to see.
I've climbed with a few sons too, also very nice, also none of my own, also borrowed. another good experience every time so far (likely to end taht way too, since I don't seem to be climbing capable any more).
Let me add one thing though, and I'm just about positive that pretty much nobody on this site needs to hear this, but I sure wish some others could:
I have seen some terrible interactions between parent and child during 'climbing lessons'-- kid terrified and in tears, parent yelling and embarrased, people in the area very concerned.
man, if they are not up to it, DO NOT PUSH EM, and if they want down, LET EM DOWN NOW. and do not give em grief. it's not right, and NEVER works out well to upset the kid and y0ourself, especially when a life can be at risk, and at 12 feet or higher, I think the kid could be in trouble. maybe not likely, but possible.
Like I said, I don't think this message applies to anyone who is a regular here, but those guys in the examples I gave, that was not something I made up, those happened, and it was not pretty.

I have two daughters (15 and soon to be 13) who love to read, travel, climb, hike, play soccer, watch the Simpsons, discuss theological issues, be goofy, do things for others, argue about music (big fans of The Cure, The Psychedelic Furs, Placebo et al.)and do a little surfing. Below is my oldest daughter, Beth Ann, warming up last month.

This thread is simply awesome. Being a father for my daughter is one of the finest things I have ever experienced.

She was bouldering near the entrance of Zion. Both daughters will have their first multi-pitch experience at Seneca Rocks. It will be 30 yrs after my first multi-pitch climb which was also at Seneca.

My daughter started at about 4, is turning 10 this summer, and anything I can lead, she finds dull. I need a ropegun!!
A close friend and climbing partner of mine has three adult daughters that grew up climbing, backpacking and skiing. Today, they are capable and confident women that have fitness and the mountains as part of their lives. Too many kids that participate in team sports stop when school is over. Climbing can be "for life."

I could not agree more. I get my daughter out climbing and backpacking as muck as I can but not as offten as I should. Today we had to settle for a surf session, shucks maybe some climbing next week on spring break.
