phrases more than words that
make me sick.
"it's all good."
"no worries."
"right on."
in parts of coloRADo
and cali, one can carry a
conversation w/those 3
phrases. throw in the occasional
"sweet" and "classic" to spice
it up some.

dude: hey bro, it's all good.
bro: no worries dude.
dude: right on.
bro: yeah, that was classic.
dude: totally sweet.
bro: right on dude.

Sounds EXACTLY like by buddy Hamid. ha

(sorry dude; just had to say that)

I'll admit though, at least with Hamid's training I could carry on a meaningful conversation with my daughter.

LOL. I loved that show.

"American Idol". Never seen it, never will but I'm sick of hearing about it.

"Reality TV". I don't have TV but this is another phrase that makes me ill.

I haven't seen this one yet:

guesstimate

"do you see what I'm saying?" No, I don't. it's impossible to "see" what you are saying, I can hear you though, is that what you mean?

nukular instead of nuclear

people misspelling the word "definitely" I almost never see this spelled correctly in forums

heinous is dumb way to describe climbing.

I can't stand that 'nukular' either.

I found this though:
http://www.hotforwords.com/2008/04/02/im-gonna-go-all-nucular-on-you/

But since W uses it I'm still not OK with it.

There are so many that have already been listed that annoy me (the hella, brah, bling crap especially). But I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the fact that our whole language is degenerating into this incomprehensible "computer-speak" or "text-language".

Is anybody else driven mad by people that drag that crap into their speech? LOL and all of the other asinine abbreviations that infect the attention deficit texting generation along with the disregard for any kind of punctuation, grammar, appropriate / inappropriate capitilization drive me nuts.

"Onry" when they want to say "ornery."

A typical conversation with someone who says "onry" and I will go as follows:

Me: Sorry to say this, but you're mispronouncing that word. It's actually pronounced "ornery."

Redneck: "Really?"

Me: "That's right."

Redneck: "Ornery-- but that sounds stupid!"

Me: "Right- that word does sound stupid."

Redneck: (confused)

I'm laughing over here at this thread.

"Reference" as a verb is totally lame and improper. It's "refers to" or "makes reference to."

The phrase "it begs the question . . . " is an improper bastardization of a term of art from logic. I see it everywhere, from student papers to the NYT or other supposedly learned information outlets. Don't do it. "Makes you wonder" or "raises questions" or some such variation on the idea works fine without transression.

"Informs" used to describe inanimate / intangibles that are incapable of action. As in "Tarantino's films are informed by his years working in a video store." Or "the artist's current paintings are informed by the work of 20th Century painters like . . ." Wretched and ignorant filler for those incapable of hewing to real English.

Speaking of language, it drives me crazy when I listen to radio and tv hosts using pronouns with the noun. My Dad, he .....My Mom, she and on and on and on. lrl

Reference is perfectly fine as a verb. If you don't believe me reference the dictionary.
