So Gene, everyone is smiling and he looks like he could be 26 or more, so this was a post war photo, right?

Ron,

No. I think the photo was taken right before the Silversides sixth patrol, which would put it mid-year '43. Upon return from this patrol, Dad weighed about 120 lbs. from being sick. I think it was the eighth patrol that Dad got the Silver Star - an amazing story I'll post if this thread maintains its legs.

EDIT: The USNA Class of '42 graduated 12/19/41. Only class in NA history to graduate not in its year.

2nd Edit: Spoke with Dad about the photo. It was taken right after patrol #8 which ran 11/43 to 1/44. He served on patrols 7 through 11.

For those interested in the Pacific theatre in WWII, my father was a ship's photographer on a small carrier, the USS Kadashan Bay CVE76 During the last months of the war.

Here's a link to a few of the photos he collected during the war and scanned http://usskadashanbaycve76.homestead.com/index.html

Yeah, happy birthday (my dad died decades ago but was also born in the '20s).

What kind of duty did the Silversides serve? Did she see action?
