I climbed with a great kid from Luxemboug. When he found out I was over 20 years older than his father I took him aside, put my arm on his shoulders, and in a lowered voice said....." son, did your grandmother ever tell you about me?"

I'd guess the demographic on this site skews well above 50.
That's because the young unemployed climbers are out CLIMBING not surfing the web.
And because I have a JOB and spend my work hours SURFING the web.

At city of rocks last summer, we ran into a foursome of 60-70 yr old buddies who were road-tripping. A couple of these guys are well known to most folks that post here -- at younger ages, they were pushing the highest standards and, equally impressive, they all still seemed like kids. The highlight was watching one who had recently turned 70 (and who had just had colon cancer surgery) fire off a 120' 5.7 lead in sneakers and a diaper. That's not all he was wearing (which really would have been something), but we learned about the diaper because he was cracking jokes the whole way up the pitch about the ease of not having to find a toilet etc. Later when he was still climbing in sneakers on increasingly difficult routes, I asked him "why no climbing shoes?" He said they were too uncomfortable. Some folks really are forever young at heart. And, for that reason, Neil Young was wrong...it isn't always better to burn out than it is to rust.

59 and my birthday is at the end of September. Still think as if I'm 20 until something I do reminds me that my bones are brittle, not flexible. Sure do like getting out though and the years give perspective.

It is important to stay young mentally as well as physically, and in that dept. I seem to be excelling, a couple of really smart people have pointed that out to me lately. it must be true.

In counting past lives, do we count the years we walked the earth, or just start when we were born first?
It's no stranger to be born twice than it is to be born once.
You know the wisdom that comes with age?
Well, it ain't worth it.
I'll be 55 this year.

Ron! Re your comment: Nice Ruger Fritz..
Is that a subtle insult?
Malemute! Re your question: Whatcha doing with that Smith Fritz?
It's an Idaho cultural heirloom. I bought it at age 17 and carry it when desert hiking with select friends. I can blame its noise for some slight deafness, but I am very comfortable, in select environments, with it on my hip.

51 in two weeks. Not really feeling it yet. Not getting any better, but at least not getting any worse. A lot easier to find climbing partners in their 20s and 30s, and a sure-fire ego boost when I can show them a new trick or two. Not so cool when they float moves that I just never did quite figure out how to do, though.

In one week, I hope to be climbing the RNWF of the big Dome. That's going to hurt.

Perhaps I can help lower the average age here ;) Turned 40 in April. As usual, I ran my age in miles on the day. I am going to do that as long as I can, until some day I have to switch to kilometres.
"I need a big weekend. Kick up the dust. Yeah a big weekend. If you don't run, you rust."
Substitute the word "climb" for "run" if you prefer.

Nice, The Lisa. I can't even imagine. Though i did re-instate a gym membership with hopes of running 3 miles every once in a while ;-)

The Lisa, running miles equivalent to your age every year is a losing proposition as is doing a pitch for every year. People should start at, say 30, with a set number of miles or pitches....ie the max they can do, and then do one LESS for every additional year.

I'm 68 and not too badly preserved. Then I was on a camping and climbing trip a couple of years ago where Donini was present, and realized I'm at least 108 .
