Both were great, but only one had God in the lineup...

and none of them were instrumental virtuosos, as was Page
Page a virtuoso? Are you kidding? That guy was sloppy as hell. He was OK in the studio when all his flubs could be edited out, live he was awful. Couldn't hold a candle to FZ.

It doesn't matter. Both were great and highly influential. All this talk of Clapton or Page etc being among the best guitar players of all time or Ginger Baker being the best drummer is plain wrong. They are good players but many jazz musicians are much better. For example Tony Williams could destroy Bonham or Baker with 1 hand tied around his back.
Miles Davis had much more going for him musically than Zep or Cream put together plus being a bigger influence on 20 C music. Huge record sales do not mean musical accomplishment.

Loved 'em both forever. So many great songs. Always dug Clapton.
For over all output and impact, I still gotta vote Zeppelin.
*Jimmy Page, a giant riff MACHINE, original, album after album.
*Plant is the better vocalist.
*Bonham was the pounder, but can't beat Ginger for pure technique.
*Jones for killer keyboard and Bass? He had no equal in Cream. Jack Bruce was great but Jones was the more skilled journeyman, all around dude.

This question cannot be serious. Clapton is still going strong and the stuff he has been doing with Winwood is awe-inspiring. But Zep's creative output is 10fold beyond Clapton, and it's not too much of a stretch to suggest Zep created a paradigm shift.
Not saying one is better than the other -- Clapton and Zep are both on my desert island list -- but in terms of the effect of Zepplin on artists to come is beyond comprehension.

Zep for me. I saw them perform at Madison Square Garden in 1977, best show I ever saw!

To me, there's no comparison. Zep all the way. Head and shoulders above just about every other band (other than the Beatles and Stones), let alone Cream. Don't get me wrong. I like Cream too, but come on...

I gotta whole lotta love for Zep! Saw them on their first tour here. Whoa!
Not often that The Doors were not the headliners but as soon as Jimmy launched there was no doubt about it!

I'm deliberating on this right now. I have read the thread and see merit in either position.
at the moment I'm leaning toward Cream, because they could almost swing (see Badge). But it's probably Zep.

"The day may come, if you're a young rocker, when you'll hear one of Clapton's mellow, contemporary ballads on the radio and think, "What's the big deal?" Put on "Steppin' Out." And bow down." - Steven Van Zandt
