best climbing compliment I ever received was from PC. Bill Frey and I climbed Aquaknobby one afternoon. We were climbing strong back then and thought a lowly 5.9 would be a stroll. Well, I found it a bit hard and scary. I gave up trying to blind place the few friends we had in the dihedral on the left and slotted a couple of nuts between knobs on the steep section leading to the crack.
We were feeling humbled driving back to the gas station. Peter was sitting outside the store there on the bench.
PC: "What did you guys climb?"
MB: "Aquaknobby"
Eyebrows went up a notch: "Pretty stiff eh?"
We felt a million times better.

Hey Peter, great to see you here. Your sterling human qualities have inspired me for decades. Some of your climbs have been OK in the shining spirit category, too. My life is greatly enhanced by your harmonious vibe. Cheers to you, my friend.

Welcome Peter, thanks to this internet thing I am finally able to say that. Ironically I just got done pointing out to a friend on Facebook your remarkable solo of The Rostrum/Astroman in a day. You inspire all with your achievements and above all you've always been a class act.Your ethics and actions reflect the proudest traditions of the great history of climbing.

John Hanson post translating avatar names to real names got me thinking. Why don't we just sign in as ourselves? Anyone really need to hide behind a made up name anymore now that the forum is populated by so many regulars posters know anyhow? It also seems more honest and straightforward to use one's name. Strong opinions can still be stated, but real names might keep tone more respectful and careful, not bad things, never mind simply make it clear who is speaking for those who don't know. And, search for Tom Higgins will find my stuff, if anyone is interested. True, supertopo seems to require an avatar and I put in LongAgo, but I always sign with my real name too. Sure works for me, like so:

If this were a basketball forum, the title of this thread could be "Welcome Michael Jordan..."
The world is getting smaller..Welcome Peter! We've only spoken on a couple of occasions, but you once left me a voicemail about the original start to Clyde Minaret. I saved that phone message for months and played it for friends.
When we got to the summit we saw your sign-in--8 a.m.!!! Wow.

I use an avatar because the last thing I want is some superstar rock God knowing that I'm gushing over him and almost every morning I wake up I want to be him. It's embarrassing. That is why I hide.

I hate to add it on but.....I've always been super inspired by tales of Peter Croft! Hell, even his name is cool! Since we're moving to Vancouver I hope some of that Canadian climbing superpower rubs off on me so I can at least sample some of his routes up there!

Wow! A lot of nice people with some very odd names. Have to say that when I was a kid I wanted to be called Tarzan or maybe Kato from the Green Hornet but I didn't know what an avatar was and people made fun of me - so I gave it up.
I'm slowly figuring out a lot of you are the hot shots I always slunk by in Josh or the Valley or wherever - under the weight of the legends I'd heard I always felt quite a bit of a poser when I made a Werner sighting, for instance.
Anyway, have to say thanks very much to Jeff Lowe for his kind words.
Whoa! Talk about inspiration! Jeff, I was probably in just my 2nd year of climbing when I saw a slide show in Leavenworth by Jim Donini. Big part of the show was about the North Ridge of Latok. I told the friend that I was with, "Man!,that's the best route in the world!" Now a bunch of years later I've had the luck to get on so many great climbs and when people ask my favorite I can't say - too many good ones. But when someone asks what I think is the greatest climb in the world - nothing's changed - it's still the Latok climb you guys did. I do think that summits matter but sometimes the adventure, the climbers themselves and subsequent history lift the ascent even higher than simply the top of a peak. I know it's just one part of your resume but to me that's the one.

Peter-
Here is a article about Latok that Steve Grossman scanned and posted.
http://www.supertopo.com/climbers-forum/845077/Latok-I-A-Climb-Without-a-Summit
And a bunch of other cool threads can be found by searching the forum (up at the top right of each supertopo page)
Lolli - I think those names are pretty well known. Here's mine not that anyone knows me:
