Seems that way to me too. And putting the other surfers in some danger from that board as well.

the menace in the kayaker vs SUP is the kayaker. downstream has the right of way. attainments ferrying and surfing are all fine and dandy but you've got to watch what's coming downstream at you.

SUP is no more boring then paddling a Kayak or Canoe on flat water. The up sides are that your up away from the water with a good view out over the water and down into it. You can fish from it with a good casting platform.
With kayaking you get wet with paddle drip always coming down on you or you're hot stuffed in the boat. Canoeing is fine but you have to maintain good posture or you'll get a sore back.
SUP gives you a good low impact workout just by being on the water working the balance and the core.
And the best part if you live by the ocean they are tons of fun to surf.
I've been surfing for 24 years and just started to SUP 3 years ago. When its too hot to climb its a great core, arm and shoulder workout to keep me in shape. Can't wait for Fall
NJ is too hot

I'm not a surfer and probably never will be.
When I first heard of SUP I thought, what's the point?
Furthermore, I hate fads.
I read a bit more about stand up paddling's origins and decided to try it on my vacation to Hawaii this past winter. My honey and I went to Hanalei Bay and spent a week paddling, surfing and hiking.
I started out paddling the flat water on the river till my balance got a bit better then headed out from the beach. Got worked the first few times. Eventually I'd warm up on a flat water paddle up the river then do laps on the swells along the buoy line and finish up trying to catch waves by the pier. The whole thing was immensely pleasurable and a great work out. My balance on the big board improved to the point I could catch a few waves on a surfboard.
There were people of all ages and abilities paddling, surfing, swimming, sun tanning and generally enjoying life on the beach with none of the animosity being described on this thread.
I live on a tidal estuary and have a kayak but the cramped confines of my boat kills my old logger's back. Stand up paddling on flat water is a great way to enjoy non mechanized recreation and stay a little fitter as I get older. I'm buying a SUP board for fun in my front yard and can't wait for my next trip back to Hawaii.
Peace

for the commuter who lives across the slough from work, stand up paddling is the most
wrinkle free solution yet devised, at least since the demise of polyester
