Bbbbbut Gadaffi was never brought to U.S. justice. Do you have an analogy that actually works?

Are the Somali pirates still operating in the region, yes. Is Ghaddafi, yes.

No, he was not brought to justice, we dropped bombs on his home and killed his adopted son.

It was his adopted daughter, Hanna, and 25 years ago.

Different situation and different players than Somali piracy. No link. Weak, at best, analogy.

Carry on.

Are you people incapable of critical thinking? Dingus' whole stupid argument against Somali pirates is that it isn't a threat to America and they never declared war on us before slaughtering innocent U.S. civilians abroad.

See the analogy now?

Ghaddafi never declared war on the U.S. (just like the Somali rats) and killed American civilians (just like the Somalis) abroad.

Get it? If you don't, I'm done.....

Bluey,

There is a very easy way to limit piracy in that neck of the woods. It is for ships to stay within the protected and defined sea lanes. The Somali pirates are picking the low hanging fruit.

Matt, with that logic, you'd have to say the Ayatollah Khomeini was Carter's buddy.

I am capable of critical thinking which is why I don't see the analogy. You seem to be saying that a bunch of non-state criminals out to make money through piracy is the exact same thing as the actions of a sovereign (if autocratic and post-coup) government looking to assert power.

The Barbary Pirates were hardly the military representatives of a recognized state.

They were an amalgam of mostly north africans that enjoyed the protections of several local arab leaders (no doubt for a price).

We attacked the arabs by land using mostly local forces and eventually our ships kicked their butts, sinking some and bombarding their ports.

No dipsh#t. I was specifically addressing Dingus' weak argument in this regard. Again you disengenuous fools will twist my words to try to make me look bad.

Follow the logic and flow of the thread, Johnson. It was a perfect analogy to his ridiculous arguement.

And Ron makes a good point too....

OK, Bluey,

What is your plan?

Gene, good question. First of all, all KNOWN pirates are dispatched with extreme prejudice. Killed.

Next, drop fliers and have a small PR capaign in Somali cities known for this (we know them) that all 'terrorists' will be shot on sight by naval crew.

No ransoms will be paid.

If the problem continues, we use AC-130 Spectre Gunships and air assets to target pirate bases on land and sea.

If the problem continues, we invade the coastal lands with Marine units and spec op's teams and kill people.

Problem solved. We really had a chance in the 90's to fix this place, but Billy Jeff Clinton didn't want to commit air assets.

Also, the base in Socotra isn't a bad idea, long term, givrn the history of this shithole!

Mighty Hiker is right on with his Johnny Depp - Bollywood theory...If the gang-banging somalians had no access to the Chinese - bootleg Pirates of the caribbean DVDS , none of these acts of piracy would be happening , proving that well intended actions have consequences...

You are missing the important bit where the Pasha of Triploi actually declared war on the United States after Jefferson turned down his demands for money. Also, the US never actually declared war.

37.8%- slightly more than one in three- of the population of Somalia is literate.

How do you tell a Mom and Pop fishing boat from a pirate ship? A family home from a den of buccaneers?

Are you gonna be their target spotter?

Bluey,
It ain't that easy. What's the record for US versus irregulars in the past 50 or 60 years.
