Hate to be nitpicky, but City of Rocks is a National REserve.

Hell, let 'em shoot. It's their land.
Robert, can I come over for a little target shooting sometime?

"I'm not condescending upon you, it just seems that some of your responses are kinda inflamatory....

Present your opinion (which by the way, I actually agree with some of the time) in a respectful manner."

Me, too...and for the record, Rox has become considerably more thoughtful and rational in his posts of late. Not sure why...alcohol? Pain killers? Meditation? All of the above?

It's just that there are a few issues that still elicit a big response from Rox, like guns, Cali, and wolves. This thread hits two out of three.

its all a nationalizing of land that takes power from the residents and gives it to bureaucrats, mostly that live a million miles away

ROK:
You might try JPT's trick for making it look as though he was able to type 1000 words per second. Type a half dozen posts up the previous night and post them all together in the morning.

You'll have everyone standing back with widened eyes. People will even ask you to take them climbing, I am told.

Doug was the real deal. When his fingers started going I could hear the sonic booms even down here next to the equator.

this is an interesting thread, I like the part
about how climbers could be percieved;

was 8 miles from the trailhead in Arapahoe
natl forest, bouldering within eyeshot of
the trail, group of hikers passed - one guy
started yelling, at me, for using.....chalk.

and I mean "yelling" - hateful face, tone etc.

seems the visual impact of chalk struck
someone as not cool...

the group leader came back later and
appologized for him.

We have a real need for someone to do some photoshop work. I have even seen glossy advertisements featuring a climber on a chalk blasted face.

Someone needs to take a photo like that and rework it to remove the chalk. Then publish them side by side for comparison. You won't believe the difference.

This is a whole lot better approach than yelling at people.

If our gun laws weren't so wacky climbers desiring more quiet could just buy the Cohns some suppressors and a tax stamp.

People's opinions are, sad to say, molded by TV and movies where suppressors are only used by cops and criminals.

Truth be told, they are very useful for home defense.

Oh yawn!

Whinning like a bitch to the NPS is going to be of no use. Forget about it.

It's private property.

When I was on SAR we used to hear radio traffic about shooting out in the Pinto Basin. This was private property as well.

Oh well. At the least, we notify them before we start shooting. We have no obligation to do so. We do it to make their jobs a little easier so they don't have to go running around the park code 3.

BTW, whoever commented that Section 6 is BLM land is incorrect. It was sold by the BLM to the Dept. of Parks & Recs. in San Bernardino County in the late 60's.

More misinformation.

Forget about the Cohn property, it doesn't concern you. If you think it does, then your sadly mistaken.

....that seems like an awful lot of defending, if it caused permanent damage!

Meanwhile - I think the reason guns don't get the quieter thing is because half the "fun" of shooting, for at least some of the people, is the loud sound.

Happie - A person can suffer serious hearing loss from one shot, depending on the gun and the space they are in at the time.

I know a recording engineer whose career was ended due to a single gunshot in the studio. No it didn't hit him, he just lost his hearing in one ear.

The gun was a .45ACP. The room was about the size of a 4 car garage and fully soundproof.

"Hey Robert, how's life?

Something interesting I thought I'd ask, If a climber were to go climb on the Cohn property and get injured, would the Cohn's not be held accountable? Is an incident like this sufficiant enough to warrant a more strict hand when keeping the property clear of miscreants (like certain guidebook authors ;D)? "

All in all, just fine, thanks for asking.

Not entirely sure about that. I'm not a bottom feeding lawyer who preys on others for their own benefit. We enforce the no trepassing rule as much as we can, equally. Makes no difference if you're a climber or a curious touron. You don't belong here without invitation.

Just like I don't belong on your property without explicit permission or an invitation.

I run the property on a regular basis to ensure people are not where they should not be.

Thanks to this thread, I will be stepping up my "patrols".

Seems simple enough to me.

As far as whinning about the shooting, oh well, it sucks to be you. Don't like it? Move to a place where there are far more stringent gun laws. Otherwise, shut the f*#k up, or write your congressman who's probably to busy buggering their misstress to be bothered with your bitching and complaining.

Oh, for the selfish fools who believe their rights are being violated while they climb the same old tired routes over, and over, and over, and over again, the area we shoot in is very well protected and not in the line of fire of anyone.

That's why the area was moved. AT THE REQUEST OF THE OWNERS!

So WHY have guns not been allowed to combine the considerable advances in sound suppression that we now have? EVERY long gun could have sound suppression technology built into them without compromising safety.
Many of those who are killed by guns are killed accidentally. Ensuring that the gun makes noise is an alarm to those nearby - duck, get out of the way. Given that lethal range can be 1,000 m or more, a loud noise is better.

Seems like rlf may have highspeed internet on the ranch. Watch out for bandwidth poachers, eh? Better still, charge them for it. Open an internet cafe.

Oops, sorry for the digression.

Any gun with a range of 1K meters or more is sending out a round at well above the speed of sound.

Therefore...

If you hear the report it means it did not hit you.

Sorry Ksolem, not exactly correct all the time.

The sound moves at a relatively constant speed losing its energy to dispersal whereas a bullet begins to decelerate and drop as soon as it leaves the crown of the muzzle.

Take a standard 9mm for example;
a 115gr bullet leaves the barrel supersonic, but only barely.
The sound catches up and passes it.
