"cliques were unacceptable"--Roper
BOGUS! I CAN TELL IT'S BERKELEY ALREADY AFTER ONE PARAGRAPH!
"Stage roads appeared gradually; so did rustic hotels. Then in 1913, automobiles were allowed into the Valley--and the stampede began." Steve Roper's writing is so good the bears refuse it.
What I mean is that it's too good for the likes of them. I lap it up, mixed metapors and all the hyphenry.
L-O-L, autos don't stampede, Steve. :O)

I think I deleted my post, what a dunce.
After the Civil War came the Reconstuction
Let's see, I lived here across from the Newman Center (1 block east of Pee-Pole's Park) and the apartment faced west so it was quite easy to get a good wiff of pepper gas.
Vvideo is here:

I thought as astute an observer as Herr Maus would notice the second video.
In the early afternoon of September 17, 1923 a fire began in Wildcat Canyon in what is today Tilden Park. On that hot fall day the fire—fueled by a strong, dry northeasterly wind—burned upward to the crest of the hills, then raced down the canyon of Codornices Creek into populated parts of North Berkeley

In case anyone was wondering. Before the arrival of films New York City had over a thousand mutoscopes:

Playing Catch-Up with zBrown--like climbing in the dark with headlamps in your dreams with no dreamcatcher. Make mine heavy-duty.
Both Plain Mountain Ordinary
Light/Heavy
Like a Bong-Bong with no hole,
Like Old King Kong,
Who knew he had no soul (?),
But remained like Merry,
Stupidly embraced by the Brown Man.

It's hard not to hide in the camouflage of a stampede of monkeys, esp. if or when one is playing the assiduous ape.
The film of Market St, taken just days prior to the earthquake, played in the NYC cine-contraptions of the day, kind of like the mutato-scopes only more geared to the eyes of nuns than boardwalk beauties. Hubba-hubba! It's my Nana's friends!

Well it woulda really been a trip if they had some footage of the Golden Gate Bridge and BART (Coit Tower, Cockettes, Ginsburg?). OK, how about the Clunie House? (The 1898 Clunie House, which survived the devastating 1906 earthquake and fire)

Lyrics to Maria Dolores:
(F. Garcia, J. Morillo)

Ms. Baez should can sing. I sat on stage during her perfomrance at the Greek. The show was sold out so they put extra seats right on stage.
this may have been it - the price was right
I always liked Te Ador, I wasn't there for this one.

The journey of the Olympic Torch in 1984 to LA from NYC.
From a chapter called "Beyond the Blues" about Memphis, TN.
A neat pair of parentheses, Beale Street and Graceland. When W. C. Handy blew the first lonesome, heartful notes of what he would call the blues in PeeWee's Saloon, Beale Street was down and dirty and he was telling what life was llike when you were black. By the time Elvis picked it up, the music had bridged a gap, somehow; it told about the life so that even people who hadn't come to the old shrine and the new one, and the wonderful thing was that the music isn't trappped in either one. It's still floating around the world, alive.
So that was one book I found today at Second Time Around.
Fact is, the man who taught me Shakespeare at Merced College, Steve, was in the store, looking author-like in a new fedora or some fifties look-a-like hat. His hat set the stage for the rest of the afternoon. He is, besides a literature instructor, the successful women's softball coach and athletic director at alma mater Merced. He is formerly the football writer for the Oakland Trib, which means Raiders, which means very serious writing. Steve played baseball at Hartnell College, 1961-1963, over by the Pinnacles, in Salinas...
Steve's being in the store was strictly providential. He has self-published two books recently. One, oddly enough, is called Bridging the Gap: Chrionicling the Case for Community College Athletics.
His other book is more my type of thing. It is called Bouncing Outside: A Picaresque Romp through American Life.
Steve's blurb on the back cover--
What do the following have in common: the Altamont rock concert; the largest cash bank robbery in US history; NFL football; and Howard Hughes' 1939 record-breaking round-the-world flight? All and more are narrated in Bouncing Outside within a 17-foot kayak in Northern California rivers and lakes: episodic insider reminiscence of American life spun through a unique point-of-view.

And then, and THEN I went to the movies--Gangster Squad!
I saw Sean Penn get the snot beat out of him as Mickey Cohen. Yup, you can't keep a good Flame away from a candle like Emma Stone. It was the first screening and only $7.75 (I know, but my movie jones is sated by thousands of rounds being fired--generally to little effect) and a lot of the folks watching were my age, real fifties survivors.
It's another Tombstone, in that the bad good boys kick the bad bad boys out of town, and it's well-directed with enough humorous banter to make it lively. The acting is to be judged for itself, since I'm no good at judging that, but the plot is standard Hollywood transparency, the sets are eye candy, and there are several surprises.
Nick Nolte's the biggest one, IMO. Gotta like the bum as Chief Wm. H. Parker, and his voice is only gonna get more gravelly. He reminds me of a heavy-set Donini, if you must know. Nothing but respect for his tenacity and endurance. He has a weasel-like driver named Darryl Gates, too. That was a high spot for me. I hate that MF on general principle.
I'm the right bad bad boy, right, Larry?

I sense some cross-over here with both The larry thread Can I Climb MPB and the Gary Thread, What Is the Blues?
I'll not defile that thread with the likes of Bobby Vinton.
She Wore Bluuuuuue VEL-vet, Bluer than Velvet Was the Night...
Blue on Blue, Heartache on Heartache...
Sophomoric close-dancing with girls whose bras felt like Cadillac bumper guards in the Our Lady of MERCY! gym, old K of C DJ Augie Navarro, spinning platters, man. and her bein' cool enough not to notice the sweat on your lip when you asked her to dance another one...
But those were pre-blues.
A year and a half later Jones was showing me his Paul Butterfield LP, then came Scrapper Blackwell and even Eric Burdon, the blue-gnome. We didn't see the blackness of the blues, though we understood others might.
If you sit in the dark, listening to John Fahey, you would not care whether his music's being played by a white or a black. It just is.
Terms of Service for living state that, it's just nobody bothers to read it.
As for The larry thread, and manure pie butt, flame on, larry!

DBA. Dilute, Brown, and non-Agouti, a strain of laboratory mice developed by C. C. Little. A Cal grad should know this, at a minimum. And how to get to the Co-Op.
A little goes a long ways, too, with DBA. They are prolific breeders.

I saw John F. play in Berkeley. Weird coincidence, he died at the same age as my father, who couldn't play an instrument, but did sing a lot. Then, John wasn't an attorney nor a judge and, obviously, he did not father me.
I had never looked into it, but John's life came to a very sad end.
BTW, that's a long way to drive in 3:12.
Until taking on the Finnish side of things, I was an incredible Scottish man myself. I only fell about 10 feet, but I was knocked unconscious. I don't know if I've got chronic traumatic encephalopathy. Hope I don't get a gun and shoot myself.
May have to move this over yonder, but another one of those blues
