JAN. 30, 2008 UPDATE FROM FAITH
Dear All,
Many apologies for the dwindling updates! I will try to be better about
these. January was fairly mellow for Bobby as he has been on bed-rest, which
is a tough place to be for 5 weeks. BUT this week he is starting to sit up
and the therapists will begin to flex his hips. This is a slow process as
they want to make sure that the skin flap on Bobby's sacrum stays intact
(but it has healed really well). Bobby's rehab doctor--Alan Weintraub--is
also dialing down Bobby's shunt, which will help to harmonize the fluid
dynamics in his brain. SO--these two things are big big steps on the road to
recovery. I will keep you posted as to how this process evolves. But all in
all, things are moving forward slowly, but surely!
Many thanks for all the continued support, emails, letters, thoughts and
visits! We are--as always--grateful. And Bobby is still feeling all the
support very strongly, of that I'm sure.
Lots going on in the world these days and I'm just sending our very best to
everyone everywhere.
With love and thanks,
Faith

hey there faith, bobby's mom, all, and bobby...
thank for you letting us all know how bobby is doing...
i am pressing on in prayer again this weekend... my friend, she has a shunt, and it can be scary, obviously, if something goes wrong....
three cheers for bobby, as he works at sitting up, hopefully in the near future...
*remember, when it does seem so very hard, not only are you learning and blazing a trail---but---your are leaving mighty good fine tracks for others to follow, as well... and you will be support to many that may some day need your wisdom, strenth, and tenacity:
the only way you can then share, will be by leaving your precious experience to pass down to others...
and bobby---well, someday, bobby, you can seek to share whatever victories are most precious to you, for whatever need arises for those around you.... or for your own joy... :)
keep following the trail--so's you can a HUGE FLAG ON TOP...
saying:
bobby model was here... and now he's off to conquer more!

Hey Bobby! Good news! Well I wanted to let you know that I'll be seeing your old belay slave Lance today. He now lives in Las Cruces, NM(about two hours from were we live now). He is married and has a little boy named Kale. God help us but Lance has procreated! It will be great to see him. We all sure had a lot of fun together over the years. I'm suprised Lance is still alive after all the questionable places you would take him climbing and skiing. Remember that time when we all went spring skiing in the Beartooths and Lance was on his tele's and we decided to ski one of the steepest runs there, you know the one where you started down you couldn't see the middle of the run because it got so steep it was concave? What I remember is that you, Selk and I and maybe Jake were about half way down right before it got really steep. We could see Lance up top and he said he was coming down. He took two turns off the top,we heard a scream, he went down and went flailing past, like he fell out of an airplane us all and slide all the way to the bottom. Some how he didn't die on the rocks below. It was so scary and so funny at the same time. I remember climbing, Lance would pop off the rock and you would let him drop almost to the ground then catch him and watch him bounce up and down while he aimed kicks at your head. Ah, the good old day's. Anyway, get healing and get better. We are proud that your doing better and look forward to a healthy 2008!
Your friend,
Lyon

Hey Bob-Meister,
Sorry it's been a while but I have been going back and forth between Washington and Madagascar for way too long, and the sad thing is that it's not about to end ... And of course, while I was home for just two weeks last month, I spent 10 of those days in bed with the mother of all bronchitis! So, not to make too many excuses, but sorry I've been such a slacker. Still thinking about you lots, though, and sending you good vibes and love, all across the Mozambique Channel, the width of Africa, the Atlantic and a good part of the North American continent. Not sure what the exact mileage that represents but I still know that it's peanuts when I think of all the joy in my heart whenever I think of you ... Oh yeah, and when I was in DC I had coffee with Liz, who showed me some old pictures of you: there is NO WAY your ears were not ringing full blast then as we laughed and reminisced about you!
I will be back in the US in a short week, and then I will try and call Faith or your Mum for the latest. The last email was pretty positive, though, so I know the news will be good. In the meantime, I need you to do me a favor, Bud, and give Faith a big thumbs-up or squeeze her hand extra-hard on her special day. I don't know about you, but I feel that your little sister is pretty special and I think everyone who knows you guys shares in the feeling. In any event, take good care of yourself, take your time coming back to us, and always know that you are loved much more than words can ever tell.
Remember too that I hold you close in the back of my mind,
Charlotte

hey there bobby and family...
say, you are still thought and prayed for, by all of us, yes, we...
say, when winter hits the hardest, as it seems to have been...
spring is just soon-to-be all the better, then...
hold you hopes up high...
and your spirit's dreams nigh...
when the warm sun again shines...
may even more hope, be thine...
*god bless, for your high places and tough trails...
to put all the more stamina, in your ol' inner-self's, sails...

Keep fighting Bobby! You are making progress and we are all rooting for you!!! When you have the time, I want to know about any (surely obscure, maybe good... maybe not so much?) routes that you've done on those flatironish fins north of the resivoir on your family's land. I was visiting family over Christmas and looking up that valley reminded me of you and the fun you must have had on those formations over the years. Take care and keep up working hard.
All our love,
The Boydstons

Bobby, Faith, and Ann,
I'm sorry i don't write in very oftn, but I just keep thinking about how all 3 of you were such a great comfort to my family during such a difficult time, and it makes me sad or maybe even angry that you are going through this. We all think of you often, my folks included. I hope the progress continues, and please know you have our love and support.

Update 2/24/8
Dear All,
I hope this email finds everyone well! In Denver, there are strong hints of
spring and I'm excited for Bobby to venture outside as the air warms.
Things continue to move forward for Bobby at a steady pace with the typical
ups and downs, which just seem to be part of the healing equation. The great
news is that he's sitting up again and becoming slowly more involved in
various therapies. From my perspective (based on Bobby's expressions and
other subtleties), it seems like stretching and moving not only feels good,
but it's also beginning to stimulate things. He is off all antibiotics and
is now only on low doses of pain killers. There is some question about how
well his shunt (which keeps the fluid dynamics in his brain harmonized) is
working. It's definitely functioning, but they are currently doing a few
tests on whether it's working well enough. But in general, we all feel
positive about Bobby's progress.
I believe Bobby is in the flow of his healing process and engaging it with
as much originality and flavor as he has always lived his life. So, while
the ebbs and flows and idiosyncrasies of his recovery confuse some, I
imagine this all somehow makes sense to Bobby. I will keep you all posted!
And finally, as always, thank you for the continued stream of support in all
the varied ways each of you have shown. We are--as ever--grateful beyond.
With love,
Faith

He Faith and Bobby,
Good to hear the news from you, Faith. Sounds like Bobby allright :-) Only travelling for two weeks with him, his great energy made a big impression on me. Talking of which, as did yours, Faith. Spring is in the air indeed, also on this side of the ocean. The season of strength and growth!

If you check out the 3/16/08 issue of the Billings Gazette, you will see pictures and a story about Bobby's life, career, accident and recovery. It is great to see the pictures and story and remind everyone that Bobby will be back.
