Those 32K could do other things that didn't rely on tourism, happened before and may happen again. Google the Bakken Formation before you go to the gas station.
BTW: WE had our city-life in 1900 and the saying goes: "Standard Oil got the money, Anaconda Co. got the copper, and Butte got the PIT" (Berkeley). City-lovers need not apply.
ONE city over 100K here, with the state population (4th largest in land area) total around 1 million. Believe it or not, tourism is highly OVERRATED. Resources is where it's at in the new millenium.
edit: What about Jim Harrison, Bob--go to Livingston and have a drink with him at the Murray Bar:-)

Howweird wrote: Ugh....how about we move the endangered smelts somewhere else or at least preserve them by breeding them in captivity? Makes sense to me but then what do I know. I just know there is something wrong with my logic. No doubt one of the more intelligent libs on this forum will point out the error of my ways.
I'm not a lib but I'll point our the error of your ways. The smelt like other endagered species is an indicator species, like a canary in the coal mine, it indicates the health of an ecosytem. It's not about saving animals over the needs of humans it's about maintaining a healthy ecosytem for humans. Silly conservatives, sometimes I do wonder about your intelligence.

We'll take any money the FED is handing out, only helps out the surplus of state fundage and gives people jobs.
Our Platinum/Palladium, Water, Wind, Oil and LAND are all we need for now--once we get the Chinese to replace GM as a major platinum buyer. The Japanese seem to enjoy the beef produced, too.
No links, coming off the top of my head--forgive me for having some loyalty to the land that allows me to survive. We are not Antarctica--plenty of folks have lived off the land here for generations, and will continue to do so in the future.

Weld County CO is ranked #1 in the state with 26,700 acres of
sugarbeets.
Once global warming has taken hold a bit more (hah!) maybe there will be tens of thousands of acres of 'Sugarcane'

The same story about commanders needing
more troops for Afghanistan has been
repeated daily for 2 week now.
Stories usually last 2 days tops.
So.. thought up a conspiracy theory to
explain it all.
1. 'They' really want to conquer Iran.
2. Need to position enough troops to invade
from the east also.We already got 'em ready
on the west side (Iraq).
3. The excuse to invade needed to be started years ago
by secretly tricking the Russian's into thinking its a 'good'
idea to sell Iran nuke technology.
4. Israel strikes first and the Iranians attack US forces
in retaliation. We strike back at them. Instant escalation.
The 24hr air war then the web cam convoys
cruising across the desert towards Tehran.

Except that the additional troops in Afghanistan are about us not getting our ass kicked there and not letting Pakistan fester any more than necessary. And check out the topo of Iran - it's a nightmare of fighting in the mountains. Only an idiot would stage a ground attack on them. And if we are that stupid we better go in with a minimum of a 500k force and I don't see where you'd come up with either the bodies or the logistics to support any such invasion. More a nightmare than a bad fantasy.

the liberal understanding of taxes:
STEPHANOPOULOS: Yet this week, Senator Rockefeller and several other Democrats say that this bill by Senator Baucus is a big middle class tax increase.
Do you agree and does that mean you can’t sign it?
OBAMA: Well, I don’t agree. I think that what they were referring to — and I haven’t looked at the quotes. But I think that they were concerned about whether or not this was actually affordable. If you’re saying to people, you’ve got to get health insurance but they can’t actually afford it and they have to pay a penalty if they don’t get it, then that’s a pretty big burden on middle class families. That’s a concern I share — making sure that this is affordable.
But the first thing we’ve got to understand is you’ve got what is effectively a tax increase taking place on American families right now. The Kaiser Family Foundation report just came out last week. Health care premiums went up 5.5 percent last year, at a time when the rest of the economy, inflation was actually negative. So that is a huge bite out of people’s pockets.
sooooooo, barry thinks that BUSINESSES create TAXES when they raise their prices
1. buying products or services from any business is a CHOICE; taxes are NOT
2. the money i use to make my purchase goes to the business of my choice; taxes go to the government
STEPHANOPOULOS: You were against the individual mandate…
OBAMA: Yes.
STEPHANOPOULOS: …during the campaign. Under this mandate, the government is forcing people to spend money, fining you if you don’t...
How is that not a tax?
OBAMA: Well, hold on a second, George. Here — here’s what’s happening. You and I are both paying $900, on average — our families — in higher premiums because of uncompensated care. Now what I’ve said is that if you can’t afford health insurance, you certainly shouldn’t be punished for that. That’s just piling on.
If, on the other hand, we’re giving tax credits, we’ve set up an exchange, you are now part of a big pool, we’ve driven down the costs, we’ve done everything we can and you actually can afford health insurance, but you’ve just decided, you know what, I want to take my chances. And then you get hit by a bus and you and I have to pay for the emergency room care, that’s…
STEPHANOPOULOS: That may be, but it’s still a tax increase.
OBAMA: No. That’s not true, George. The — for us to say that you’ve got to take a responsibility to get health insurance is absolutely not a tax increase. What it’s saying is, is that we’re not going to have other people carrying your burdens for you anymore than the fact that right now everybody in America, just about, has to get auto insurance. Nobody considers that a tax increase.
People say to themselves, that is a fair way to make sure that if you hit my car, that I’m not covering all the costs.
ok, barry, i am not FORCED to buy car insurance unless i CHOOSE to drive a car...your plan FORCES everyone to buy health insurance even if we choose not to (which is the choice i made when i was in my 20s)
now, here's the best part...barry rejects calling fines a tax even when the bill (that's the baucus bill that barry was defending) call it an EXCISE TAX!!! (page 29, Subtitle D, Shared Responsibility)
Excise Tax. The consequence for not maintaining insurance would be an excise tax. If a taxpayer’s MAGI is between 100-300 percent of FPL, the excise tax for failing to obtain coverage for an individual in a taxpayer unit (either as a taxpayer or an individual claimed as a dependent) is $750 per year. However, the minimum penalty for the taxpayer unit is $1,500. If a taxpayer’s MAGI is above 300 percent of FPL the penalty for failing to obtain coverage for an individual in a taxpayer unit (either as a taxpayer or as an individual claimed as a dependent) is $950 year. However, the maximum penalty amount a family above 300 percent of FPL would pay is $3,800.
i guess it all depends on what the meaning of the word is is

Looks like BHO jumped the shark with his talking heads blitz this weekend.
I like most of America didn't watch.
The only two take away stories covered this morning were that BHO has a unique view of what taxes are,
and his Sgt Shultz moment over ACORN.

President Obama not only has a devastating problem with Acorn and the 800,000 dollars he gave to them.
He also turned off the anti-money laundering features on his website during his campaign and didn't realize that the credit card companies still keep the records.
Obama has a lot to answer for.
