How supremely arrogant it is for us and our scientists to consider our abilities and knowledge capable of overwhelming that of nature.

how grotesquely selfish it is for one small segment of society to dictate how and where the majority can live.

Must be back in the Meth-Su and partaking of the local product. That's a nice strawman you've built there Sumner.

Yes, man is so arrogant to think he can figure out anything at all about nature and the physical environment...by the way, did you walk from the Meth Su back down here, or did you use one of those arrogant flying or driving machines?

It's nice to see you've dropped the self-taught scholar charade and gotten to the core, which is your fear and caricature of the motives of others.

At the rate we are going, i wouldn't think it unlikely that we are in for a self imposed collapse. We could spend days arguing about the causes of of our societies ill's and agree about as much as the Israili's and Palestinians. If what i think is going to happen, does in fact happen, then firing scientists will be a moot point since the dark age we will have entered will not afford the luxury of science in the face of desperate survival. Then you could see some "true environmental degradation". Gamble? I try to cover my bases and reduce the odds. I can offer you a small wager though. By 2016 their will be no significant denial that we are in a cooling trend say about .05 c, or better, per decade. $5000.00 .

Bruce, from the times i worked and climbed with Daryl, i can say he was unlike you- his humor was not mean spirited and he didn't spend all his time in meaningless analysis of others. He was one hell of a climber and could hold his drugs and liquor too.

Ed, don't you think inflicting economic hardship in this time of uncertainty is gambling with an unknown far more dangerous than the feeble signal of human contribution superimposed on a natural cycle of climate change. Look at the history of the 1920's to mid 1940's for the gamble that this scheme might help inflict.

I'm not crying anything Bruce. I find you to be a very strange individual. You also claimed to be a capitalist nail bender in prior posts.

Again... how did you AGW true believers fall for the big lie?
If there is a certain type of person who is more gullible, you
guys are it.
Or maybe you just got exposed to AGW propaganda when in a weakened
mental state?

You got a lot to learn about Kentucky, boy. Try learning the difference between bourbon and sour mash whiskey and where each comes from. JD ain't no Kentucky spirit.

Back a ways there was some discussion about ocean heat content, which appears to be where most of the recent GHG warming has gone. The most direct evidence for this comes from the Argo float network (http://www.argo.net/) and other deep-water measurements. Independent support comes from both satellite and tide-gauge measurements that show rising sea levels, resulting partly from melting ice but to a large extent also from thermal expansion as ocean waters warm.

The satellite-based University of Colorado sea level time series (http://sealevel.colorado.edu/), which many scientists regard as definitive, has just been updated through July 2013. Here's what that looks like:

Despite week-to-week variations in this index, the upward trend is striking, and the 2013 mean is the highest so far.

Geez. More stata graphics. Are you sure that graph isn't upside-down?

Chiloe,

Just curious why the beginning of that data series has negative numbers? Looks like the first 3 years or so.

Good question, the values are anomalies (dMSL) rather than absolute mean sea level (MSL) that would be hard to define. Which means they are calculated as deviations from an arbitrary reference period, apparently the first few years of the series.

The Lowess looks good... but definitely the work of an elitist.

Gotcha, guess I'm more used to seeing a delta symbol in my work. Wasn't sure if it was a truncated version of the series that started some time earlier.

EC, the truth is I was too lazy to look up how to place a delta in the graph, so used d as a quick-dirty substitute instead. But since you noticed I just went back and fixed that, so now it has a proper Greek letter.

There's a much longer MSL record based on tide gauges, but the CU series only goes back to Dec 1992. Below is an older graph I did from the tide-gauge data (Church & White). Looks like I smoothed this one with a quadratic instead of lowess.

cheers,
L

Looks like the smoothed series is going parabolic. Any chance you have a handy CO2 emissions series to overlay? (Yeah, I know asking a question only takes 3 seconds, but doing the work to respond much longer, so no worries if you're busy)

The Keeling CO2 data only go back to the late 1950s, but they have a slightly quadratic look similar to the Church & White sea level -- I think the fit would be pretty good, apart from the noise in both series.

I give little value scientific proclamations of a nation that now stand at 26th of the worlds nation in science and math.

Who would you trust more? A student who scores high on an exam, or a scientist who wins a Nobel prize

Hong Kong (top students in math and science) has only one Nobel winner

Bro, IPCC ain't just the top climate scientists from the USA..., hence the name "International."

The WORST fire seasons on record were, 1883, 1910 1926 in that order, i believe.

Ron, perhaps you can tell me; how big do you think the Rim Fire would be if we used the fire-fighting tactics from any of the "big fire" years you've mentioned?

Come on now, be honest.
