Given that Los Gauchos had a bonafide goal disallowed and that they played
a remarkably flop-free and clean game they deserved it.
Who calls them los gauchos? That's like calling all Americans cowboys. 2/3 of all argentines live in the Buenos Aires area, and there are as many Gauchos in Uruguay and even Brasil's Rio Grande do Sul province.
The first historical reference to gauchos in South America was in that province, and it is what people in the South of Brasil are known as.

Who calls them los gauchos?
I do and it is hardly a pejorative. We'll have a beer some time and I'll
tell you about my time on la finca down there. ;-) The gauchos are proud.
At least the gauchos work hard instead of sitting around collecting the dole.
Some of my friends...also hard working. It ain't no bed of roses on la finca!

Lorenzo, I'm saying they will be going for Germany and not their Los Gauchos rivals.

Yeah, it was outside the goal. I missed that too from the angle. I should have known since they did not pitch a fit at the bogus offside call.

I wondered that too but I must have had a TIA just then. Actually, I
thought they were just being stoic. I'm not sure I've ever seen an
Argentine side less argumentative or theatrical. Major kudos.

I was pulling for the Dutch 'cuz I think (still) they're a bit better team than Argentina and more fun to watch when they've got it together, but there's no question that the hardest thing of all to watch if you were pulling for the Netherlands was the number of crosses that Kuyt and Sneijder rifled way over everyone and across the end line. It was as if they thought the goal was twenty yards closer to the far corner. Between them they must have hit that same area at least a dozen times. I thought the Dutch were far more dangerous and likely to score in the second half and OT than Argentina, and shoulda woulda coulda with the Van Persie from earlier in the tournament. But they had exactly the same problem (and the same woefully ineffective Van Persie) in the Costa Rica game. If you can't finish you're in trouble. Oh, well. Good luck to Argentina and Germany, hope we get a competitive game with a few highlight reel shots and stops!

Watched the game last night and I thought Argentina was clearly the better side and deserved to win. The Argentines continued to create chances until the end and they never collapsed in their defending 1/3, even when the Dutch turned up the heat toward the end of regulation time. Romero's performance, throughout the game and especially during the pks, was beyond impressive. I was glad to see a "clean" game from both teams.

I've noticed that the brazoka really seems to fly. Lots of passes and shots on goal going long and high. I think all the players are hard-wired for a heavier ball, especially under stress, eventhough they supposedly had time to get used to the new, lighter ball. Am I wrong?

As a gringo, here are 10 things not to say in Buenos Aires...
That guy hasn't been there in a couple years. There are Walmarts, and Costco's, they don't always have the best prices. Carefour, a French chain, often is a better place to shop.
Also, there are Lowe's and Home Depot, Starbucks, and TWO Macdonals right across from the Obelisk, with a Burger King sandwiched between them.
A couple blocks away is the Cafe Tortoni, which has better food and prices. It is the oldest cafe-restaurant in the city.
The Starbucks made no sense whatever. You can get great espresso served on China, a media luna, a couple cookies, and a complementary Swiss chocolate piece at La Biela in Recoleta for about 4 pesos, or about 75˘ USD, have it served to you by a nice mozo ( waiter) while you watch Buenos Aires go by.
If you are lucky, a bandoneon player in a clown suit will be playing for tips nearby.
The Starbucks is at US prices and packed with tourists.

Just watched a piece on Leonel Messi... Now I think Messi and Argentina almost have to win.... But I also know the German squad is precision tuned...

Haha.
This one, and only Spring 2012 the Peso was 4:1
But you made me check the peso Arg again, and it is over 8 to 1 USD RIGHT NOW. yikes!
I checked it this Spring and it was 6:1 I was thinking of heading back until the city decided I needed a new sewer.
But I bet you can get it for a greenback if you went down now.
