That Curtis Johns flick rocks! That is way more inspiring than some dude skiing backwards on a groomer. That film (made in 1986) shows telemark skiing (pardon me, not "Telemarking") when it really meant something. I believe the ski industry hastened the irrelevance of telemark skiing with each "improvement" in equipment. It was special in leather boots. Now people rightly ask,"so what"? The plastic boots and wide skis have robbed it of anything exceptional. It is now merely a contrivance. I still like it. It feels good to me, but with the accessability and ease of the new equipment the thrill of minimalism is gone. Like free soloing barefooted, Telemark skiing gave us the magic feeling - when we weren't crashing - of breaking the rules, of stretching the limits of the possible. All that is gone now, and it's no wonder no one cares!
Have to agree with you Urmas, Having learned to Tele on a pair our Europa 99 and Snowfield boot, I embraced many of the changing equipment trends that kept making skiing easier until it just became too heavy compared to an AT set up. On the bright side at least no one wears knee pads on the outside of their pants anymore :-)
Norm the last shot I posted was from Assidake ropeway in Hokkaido. A civilized place, where you can ski powder and then grab a beer from a vending machine.

those skinny super long stiff almost unturnable skies sucked! I have never had modern telle skies but put telle bindings on modern alpine skies and they turn pretty darn good.

Dale. you should see Isa ski on modern telle gear. Unbelievable how crazy she rocks. About 15 years ago at Killington one of the ski patrol supervisors told me that Isa is not just the best tele skier on the mountain, she is the best skier on the mountain. Isa switched to AT last year to give her knees a break. this winter she is teaching Alpine in Leichtenstein.
Isa back in the day Isa on alpine race skiesw/ telle bindings and T2s 2009 Isa's daughter Nina skiing like mom.

He reminds me of Isa's Dog Bo. Bo was a huge wolf looking husky and he went on our XC ski jaunts with us. His favorite game/trick was to run allong behind you, get real close and then cut in and nudge your foot perfectly to send you heinie over tea kettle.. bhe seemed to know the perfect spot to do it. this really steep narrow hill on the way back to the cabin that was a bit treacherous on XC skies. Bo dumped me there a bunch of times... probbly just jealous;)

You gotta get down and Deep to do a real Tele Turn
Like that pro above, Isa, Hooray!
Weigh that back ski by sitting on it
though it's hard on the knees and quads no matter what you do

Nah, there is so much more power and control to be had with a shallow dip. Once I learned that I could ski anything. Before that I just looked cool.

WRONG!!!!
you need to go low for power and control
especially in bad snow
If you're doing a low dip, it's either a low speed slacker turn
or a Fake-a-tele turn
you can see a fake-a-tele turn a mile away, they keep their front leg straight, which means they aren't weighting the back leg and just doing an alpine turn on their front ski and letting the back ski go along for the ride.

Flip Flop, looks like near-breakable crust - ugh!
NICE fall-line form, Craig, and quiet hands. I know I stay lower and sit the rear ski more with skinnys, can fake it more with a larger shovel and more sidecut.
But I kinda suck, so who knows...

You can't show it any better than this
she knows how to do a tele turn
once you get it, it seems easier than a alpine turn, except for the muscle thing, bending your legs takes more muscle power
You don't have to go low all the time, but you WILL have to get low once you hit the crap snow or the bumps

Oh man. I sure do miss tele. I was never as good as the folks in the pics but I did love it.
I finally to revert to Alpine and some back country skiing all because of an arthritic toe that just wouldn't let me drop my knee. All my attempts to work around were just too tedious.
Thanks for those awesome shares!

Isa just floats. she bounces in and out of that possition so fast and light that she claims it does not take any effort.... When i worked at killington people would see us skiing together and always say "saw you guys skiing the other day. Isa looked great!" Yea, I know, I suck......

though it's hard on the knees and quads no matter what you do
Been doing it for almost 30yrs and I gotta disagree with the above except the quads part. Parallel turns/alpine bindings bother bother my knees at about half day, tele it ain't till the latter half and it is always my quads burning and not my knees. I do leg/knee specific therapy at the gym, fixt-CX and moto-enduro. Also, there are more than one way to turn and I just let my mood/terrain dictate that sh!t...it's hardy the fall-line with so many interesting features around here and fortunately they don't know how to groom!

I have friends that say that too and I shoulda added the 'for me' part.
Since I started riding the fixt-CX my right knee that is missing an ACL hardly hurts. It is all about the joint health, even though I might-could use an ACL but it's been about 17yrs since I had it.
Movement execution and regular PT will minimize the pain of it all....
