I encourage The Beautiful Game historians to go to BBC and look for:

I read it on the BBC Sports app but I believe it is on their regular website. Really great read.
“In his autobiography, Yashin wrote that his “childhood ended” at the age of 11 when he and his family arrived in Ulyanovsk, about 800km east of Moscow, chosen as a safe place to relocate the munitions factory where his father worked. By the time he turned 13, Yashin was working there himself, making bullets.
He wrote: “Girls and boys of my generation waited in line for bread, dreamed of victory on the front and a spare piece of lump sugar. We had to make sacrifices long before our time.”
“In war, we received an experience that no course will ever be able to teach,” he wrote. “We were taught how to work - not out of fear or for promises, but to work for one's conscience and to work oneself to the bone. When we were competing for championships and titles, we weren't thinking about the rewards victory might bring, but were happy instead just to be able to play football.”

Heartbreak this morning with Egypt giving up the late goal on a similarly stoopid foul.
La Femme lived in Egypt in her ute so we are all in for them. Really a shame Salah couldn’t play. That Egyptian keeper is great! 😢

Fantastic free kick at the end from Ronaldo, otherwise I thought it was actually a pretty average game for him. He's supposed to make penalties, and the only reason he got the second goal was a big mistake from De Gea.
Spain got way too conservative after going into the lead. Several times they seemed to pull out of promising attacks just to knock the ball around and waste time.
All in all though, a very enjoyable game to watch.

It's gonna look like Chile v. Mexico during the gold cup a couple of years back.
Mexico will be lucky to score against the machine.

Hardly ever watch soccer but occasionally if there's no paint drying near me to monitor, I'll turn it on.
It is sort of interesting that Mexico leads Germany 1-0 as I write this. Seems to me that the Germans are a lot better (and looks like the Mexicans engaged in a little cheating but the refs are on their side). They also seem physically dominant--just larger and more machine like.
But soccer is such a ridiculously low-scoring sport los mexicanos may well pull it out, I kinda hope so just to teach the stuffed shirts who are so sure the Germans will win a lesson.

I don't know, Germany looks completely dominant and would win 8 or 9 times out of 10, just in a game where scoring is so low, there's a big random element. Still hoping the Mexicans can hang on, they have a chance at least.
