I'm one of the converted telemarkers who only does AT now, and really "doesn't care that you tele."
While some of the skiing is impressive, it certainly is not new school, nor is the skier without his technical faults.

Regardless of mode let's all be thankful for what's under our boards.....it's been an amazing year here in the Tahoe Sierra.

Michael Browder shows us his rigid and crusty mindset. He must be a joy to ride with. It's just a dude ripping the mountain on twin tips having a blast. I bet he's better than you ever were...even in your AT gear. I'll be happy to video Michael Browder so we can critique his technique. Snore.

Holy Cow we've come a long way! I'm glad that I learned on leather and skinny skis and I'm glad that I can still rip KT on a powder day. I'll admit that I parallelamark a lot and also that I have AT envy but I love love love the freedom. Except when I don't.

That Curtis Johns flick rocks! That is way more inspiring than some dude skiing backwards on a groomer. That film (made in 1986) shows telemark skiing (pardon me, not "Telemarking") when it really meant something. I believe the ski industry hastened the irrelevance of telemark skiing with each "improvement" in equipment. It was special in leather boots. Now people rightly ask,"so what"? The plastic boots and wide skis have robbed it of anything exceptional. It is now merely a contrivance. I still like it. It feels good to me, but with the accessability and ease of the new equipment the thrill of minimalism is gone. Like free soloing barefooted, Telemark skiing gave us the magic feeling - when we weren't crashing - of breaking the rules, of stretching the limits of the possible. All that is gone now, and it's no wonder no one cares!

I had forgotten how bad the equiptment really was and what geeks we were.....
I went to mad river a few weeks ago and it was mobbed supriseingly I only saw about 15 pinners.. that made me realize that telley is pretty much over. heck seven years ago at Okemo and killington over 50% of the ski patrol was on pins and a good percentage of customers. I hit Killington a month ago on a wed that used to be mobbed with the wed telle crew. Zip. Nada.. its done. everyone got old and switched to AT. Most of the youngsters that do back country are on AT.

Charlie, I'm jealous of your bluebird powder shots. We've had a lot of powder days but very little blue.

Hey Urmas,
Those skinny skis were torture and I'm sure that you ski modern stuff. I'm hearing a lot of old skiers complaining all the time. It is as if they've forgotten that it's just play. Grumpy Old Men

Yes those skinny skis and leather boots were a challenge. That's why it felt so good when everything was perfect and you could link a few turns before crashing. And yes I do use modern gear now. That's the main reason I'm skiing better these days. I don't see what there is to complain about!

I haven't been to Mad River in ages. Last week, I was skiing in Utah, there was a place on one of the lifts, where it went down steeply (IIRC Solitude) and I flashed on a trip down the single chair at MRG when I broke a binding right at the top.

^^I remember that ad! Had the poster for a while, even.
Left my left supraspinatus and probably subscapularis tendon at MRG many moons ago. Haven't been back, but what a cool place.
Nick, awesome vid - dude at 2:19-2:24 has some real deep chops. And Isa's hip rotation makes her soooo smooth. Was at the 'Loaf with the pseudo-nephews this weekend for the first time in 2 years on any kinda boards, Crossbows and Vertical STs instead of the tele gear. Took a bit to find my happy place, let me tell ya.
