Among those who have little, sharing is a virtue, and the practice was common in campgrounds around dinner time. I cemented social bonds and added variety to one's diet. [Jack] Lasner, however, tookk advantage og the custom. He would wander over to a table where a Coleman stove was purring and, pulling a waxed-paper package out of his pocket, ask if anyone wanted some of his sardine and jelly sandwich. He had followed the form, if not the substance, of communal living, so it was only natural that his hosts would refuse and then offer Jack some of whatever the were cooking.--Going Up
Joe's generation had Jack Lasner. We had, among others, Dick Ellsworth. Food's good, I hope to cook up some dinner that's special today. It's Bevin's birthday, too, yeah.

I was wandering as I am sometimes inclined and it occurred to me there has been no discussion of singing pigs on this thread.
I checked with Mark Twain, who had a lot of opinions and this is what I found:

This is a Christian/Pagan holiday and there is no Hannukah Thread. Pigs are up for dinner tomorrow by the millions, got little to sing about this time of year.

I was just blessed with a gift of special significance.
I've been estranged, no other word, from my stepson's family, but tonight we made boo-boos better. I was with Alan Hansher and forgot that Jennifer and Scott had earlier this morning asked me to attend their little congregation's Christmas Eve service, to be held downtown, more or less next door to the Partisan Bar.
As Alan and I were making our way back to the Tioga to eat our Subway sandwiches, I remembered I was to meet the kids and it was just After Six.
I was reminded in time (TY, Jesus) somehow...hmmm. What do you suppose...Who's prayin' out there?
So I got to the service and was served up a slice of love cake. No other word. Well, it was tiny bits of bread and grape juice, but the point was made. Each of us is in this together and we are all "brothers and sisters on tomorrow" (Capt. Beefheart) starting today, right now--you can't avoid it.
Little sisters Lizzie and Sopia are being sit with as they are babies, yet.
I was given toffee, cookies, this wonderful card, and a ride back to the Tioga. All in all a blessed night.
