A couple of things:
1. We don't know how much can be saved by enforcing non-abusive behavior in the insurance and pharmaceutical corporations. So this comparison cannot be done - at this point. For instance US made and packaged drugs bought from Canada cost much less than the same drugs in the same packages in the US. US citizens are being treated as captives.
2. It is an assumption that bureaucratic costs will run as amuck as have corporate expenditures. The management we see in SS and Medicare suggests this is not a given. SS is managed with a 3% yearly management cost. Go into a SS office and see how long you have to wait for help and how busy the people are.
3. Pfizer has been hit with four prosecutions in 10 years for its practices, The latest a $2,300,000,000 penalty for off label marketing violations having criminal penalties. Using Federal prosecutions and class actions suits is NOT a cheap way to manage health care.
4. Corporate violations of contracts substantially contributing to medical indebtedness for something like 27% of Californians is not a way to manage health care. People are losing their houses because of corporate abuse.
5. Because the system is broken and outrageous bills are being charged the uninsured, we all are in effect being held captive by the insurance industry. Captives can be charged far more than what is appropriate for the value received.
The above statement is completely unsupported AND it ignores the fact the legal rights of US citizens are being violated with near impunity.
Read your newspaper.
