Ya know, I think there's a reasonable likelihood that Trump really was trying to say that if any group of people could stop Hillary's so-called (totally BS, BTW) goal to wipe out the Second Amendment, it would be the Second Amendment crowd.
But this is politics in 2016, and careful communication matters- the slightest slip is going to be magnified and viralized in a heartbeat, and any truly savvy, disciplined leader should know this deeply and by heart. A simple communicative lapse that results in the loss of an 'n't in your intended 'aren't' is going to be latched onto by your opponent and the media instantaneously.
Trump's problem is his constant, unrelenting shoot-from-the-hip style that doesn't carefully choose his words, or how to communicate them. Sometimes it works, and his TrumpCuppers clap wildly...other times, it becomes another reason why no-one in their right mind should trust this pathologic, empathy-less narcissist.
One word for you, Donald: Teleprompter.

Trump was not my first choice for the nomination in opposition to the radical leftists represented by the Hildabeast, but he is now the only choice. As such, I've contributed to his campaign generously.
There is already assaults in progress on our 1st and 2nd amendments.Look at moves by state attorney generals and the federal attorney general to prosecute scientists not in agreement with the CAGW meme, look at the political correctness leftist movement, amply represented here and all social media, which promptly shouts down any alternative expressed beliefs with the universally memorized shouts of bigot, homophobe, xenophobe, racist, and bitter clinger. Look at the calls for gun control after each terrorist action which they pass off radical extremism unconnected to the Islamic ideologies of the leading clerics these very extremists pledge allegiance to.
I'm not a religious man or a gun owner other than a few hunting rifles, but I do not condemn people's rights to worship as they please or to possess firearms without undue limitations by the federal, state or local government.
It's an easy choice. With Clinton your going to get big intrusive government with a distinct bent to limitation of rights to all but her cronies and higher party appartchiks, as well as more of the same policies in place for the last 16 years. With Trump, you at least have the chance for smaller, less intrusive government and a different path that could well lead to econpmic prosperity.
