Tell us Ksolem......
Well then,
Back then I assumed I’d live my life as a musician (little did I know how derailed that career would get.) It ran in the family. My Dad was a seriously good singer, not so much an operatic voice but beautifully suited to Bach, Handel and so forth, and the man could sing Schubert. Omg.
You can’t see it, but that’s a German Steinway concert grand my stepmom’s playing on. There was also a harpsichord, clavichord, and a small portativ organ in the room.
Anyway, that was in the music room of this big old Victorian on Staten Island N.Y. We were performing for guests at a party. Our parties tended to be large crazy gatherings of musicians, dancers, artists and organists. I distinguish organists from musicians because they are, well, different.
At one of these parties one didn’t necessarily want to know what was going on up in the small third floor bedrooms originally for servants’ quarters, now reserved for debauchery of all varieties.
We had a sign we’d put up down at the bottom of the driveway:
INVITED GUESTS ONLY, PROSECUTORS WILL BE VIOLATED
I always got a special kick out of that since one of our neighbors across the street was NYPD, and the other was a parole officer.
So I guess the story behind the picture is the story of all of the craziness that transpired in that restoration project we called home.

The Gunks Carriage Road look at the "Uberfall", from Doug's Roof Late 1970sA short time after the transition
from pins & hammers to free gear,
It had to be late in the switch, '77? is a guess
many of us carried our hammers till at least 76
As far as the Top roping, that was always a part of things,
Hip belays for sure but
the Harnesses?
they were not as common as swami belts
What else seems strange
No chalk bags or EBs The Climbs just left of, underneath the UberfallThe top rope is on a climb called "Low Exposure" I think
Hopefully, Donald Perrey can add what year or Time period

That's funny, Marlow. I was thinking that maybe it was the organists that saw themselves (as) different!
