By the way, there are a select few spots in the Sierra where you can get the Grand Slam...Rainbow, Brookie(char), Brown, and Golden. Anybody ever do it?

Twice, all four in one day. different spots.
Damn this looks high

Have any of you ever hooked a corn-eyed brown trout? They can be widely variable in size, have a naturally unpleasant odor and are definitely catch and release. Dry fly or bead-head, they are equal opportunity "fish". Not much in the way of a strike, but they can fight. Handle with gloves.

Don't know if these are rainbows or goldens. However, it was amazingly easy to get fish while climbing Whitney, and I am not that skilled at fly fishing.

from wikipedia
adults range from 6–12 in (15–30 cm) long. Fish over 10 in (25 cm) are considered large. Golden trout that have been transplanted to lakes have been recorded up to 11 lb (5 kg) in weight. The world record golden trout was caught by Charles S. Reed, on August 5, 1948, from Cook Lake in the Wind River Range. That fish was 28 in (70 cm) long and weighed 11.25 lb (5.1 kg).
You want a biggie? set your Time Machine to 1948, rent some mules, pack into the Wind Rivers.

Jim, you beat me too it!! ha, ha,

That was a great trip!

Maybe I didn't catch one last week, but I'm sure that I caught my fair share in my beloved Wind Rivers.
Man, I love that place!

I'll be back next year if I'm still standing.

Funny you should ask. I just hand mucked two for dinner on friday night. Went for a four day climbing trip with a buddy in the Sierras and went super light on food. Figured some extra protein couldn't hurt. I would tell you all how it's done but then I might miss out on my shot to be the next Survivor Man.

Looks like a female brookie. Look for the bright orange colors on gill cover. Like Timid said there are a lot of hybrids around.

We got to see a few goldens in the streams during a recent trip into the hills.

Read a bit of a sad story, that this area was what California Fish & Game had used for years and years to restock rivers with "pure" goldens...only to find out recently that they were actually stocking hybrids. Damned shame, because they worked really hard to keep them isolated.
