Just back from a long stay at the Urgent Care Center. The
X-ray shows no break, thankfully, but I have a severe
"trauma" to the bone and surrounding area, with substantial
interior bleeding. The whole upper leg has swollen twice
the size of the other leg, and it has now turned mostly all
black, as the "lots of bleeding" is clearly happening. The
doctor wants me to return tomorrow for an ultra sound,
to check for clots, as that will be the biggest danger --
as Jan rightly stated. He did say, though, that because
I have been hobbling around I probably decreased my chances
for a clot, as they happen more often when someone is still
and does not move at all. So let's cross our fingers on that count.
I asked him why it was so painful, and he said frankly
the kind of trauma I have could be about as painful as it
gets, easily as painful as an actual break. So tomorrow
I am back to the doctor for the ultra sound. Good news,
other than the bill, but everything could be worse. It will
take quite a long time for this kind of injury to heal.

Thanks to all of the caring spirits here who have shared
so many thoughtful remarks. I won't forget any of you.
Trust me, I have heard each and every one of you and note
in my heart your love and concern.

To better days, then,

Pat

Glad to hear that's resolved. I've had a few bone bruises that were amazingly painful, all things considered. The discoloration will last a while...

hey there pat, say, i just found this by accident, when i was looking for native american calendar dates...

it is from phil konstantin's site...
http://www.americanindian.net/

(hope it goes right, my browser if not copying as it should)

say if you love to read, he has one called:
"this day in north american indian history"

BUT THIS IS WHAT I FOUND:
it was a shock as to how timely this matched your situation:
http://drowsydriverawarenessday.com/sleep.html
http://drowsydriverawarenessday.com/

he wrote a note about how his wife robyn died, traveling from texas to san diego--a very educated and accomplished woman--she fell asleep at the wheel...

*he was a highway partolman, at home, at that time...
and she was a well known and well liked gal--she did whale watching in san diego...

Read the OP and thought, "Nice, a little teaser from Mr. Ament". Came back and found this wasn't fiction after all...
Glad no fx, but DVT, compartment syndrome, femoral artery, hello?
Hope you're mending well.

Holiday gift, random act of kindness: Pat's books might be appropriate for a fellow climber or someone who appreciates expressive and poignant prose.
I got mine via this offer:

but you can still find them elsewhere if you look.

Good news Pat.
Like I said, better to take pictures and know.
Don't fret over the bill.
I bet you'll make it all back a few months from now when you win Dancing With The Stars.

Glad to see you're on the mend. Careful now....you lads of a certain age need to be more circumspect.

Ron that is SPECT not CISION. he he.

Pat I too am relieved you saw the medicos. Having just gone through a blot clot I will tell you first hand they hurt like hell. The docs get real serious about them. So keep moving and watch out. The ultra sound is a critical diagnostic tool. Blood thinners suck but they are better than the alternative. Take care of your self and keep us informed as to your progress. Good thoughts your way!

Come to think of it, those people in the ER are like that.

I was brought in on a backboard with a fractured T12 after a MV collision but apparently they didn't think I was in quite enough pain. Thats when they stuck a tube up my penis.
Boy, that did the trick!

Doesn't take even a minute for some of you guys
to drift into the potty, penis talk... But then again
maybe we do need to make this more of a laughing matter.
It is a bit laughable that I would be up on the rock
in the first place and fly down the wall at this age.
Had to get up this morning and go to the dentist
for the second phase of a root-canal/build-up/crown.
Hardly felt the pain in my mouth but for what I felt
in my leg. Soon now off to the ultra sound. To get in
and out of the car is as hard a move as I've done on rock,
just about. Must be just part of my makeup to create
difficult problems...
