Thank you, Peter, for your generousity of heart and spirit, your willingness to share your (our) history and your willingness to mentor those who, like me, have much we can learn from you! Plus, your climbs continue to inspire others to maintain and reach for high standards of technique and ethics. Your presence here on S.T. is an inspiration to me and to many others. Thank you!

Turned Peter onto this cool little place back in the mid 70s. Not sure how many years he lived there but it was a fabulous slice of turf in Santa Cruz. Think he still owes me a bottle of Scotch for this one?

I think it's about time for Peter to come on down and make good on that, Guido. He hasn't seen Doug's new digs, or the Plywood AntiChrist, or...

Scuffy, I am actually coming down this Friday for a doctor’s appointment and to kick DR’s ass at the gym. And Tauna’s too. They have been down there without supervision I have found! Scuffy I have seen Dougian’s new place. I have not only visited him a bunch of times there but even have stayed overnight. It’s a great location. And his housemate Amanda is a terrific gal; she’s works with one of my doctors actually, is brilliant and gorgeous as well. Quite a bit better looking than your Plywood Antichrist, Scuffy.

Guido, I had forgotten it was you that turned me onto Larimore’s guest house on West Cliff Drive. Thanks tons once again; it was a great period of my life and what a location, right on the water. That was also one of the peaks of my love life, obviously. It was while staying there though that I sustained the first bad trauma to my rt knee, being thrown onto my board out at the Lane just down the road 1.1 mile during a bigger day. The riprap wasn’t there yet in front of my house, it is showing in your photo above. I stayed there for about four years. My rent was $350 at the time which was of course a lot of money but appropriate for what I got. My stay predated the construction of the bike path and the reconfiguring of West Cliff Drive. About half way through though, they did build all that and the shoreline became incredibly much more popular just because of the road and path. It's not like the ocean was suddenly 'in town'! It used to be kind of a neglected area, hard to believe.

OK, I gladly stand corrected on the Doug's Digs issue.
To say that Amanda is prettier than the Plywood Antichrist doesn't take
more than a millisecond or so to determine.
I'll be looking for you Friday. No trickery, right?

I've only seen what Peter Haan contributes in this virtual ST world. That's enough. Much appreciated...

Thanks everybody. Yeah, it is all true, I am sixty-six now. Born in Honolulu a couple of years after the war. Holy Mother. And I have been climbing since 1963. Yes a mere waif then. Now look at me.

I have been busy getting my house into escrow this spring and haven't written much at all. A couple things got published though in Alpinist and Rock + Ice. I will get to it though. Soon I will actually have a ton of time I assume, once this big property is off my back. And I will be able to do an extended road trip too, lose a ton of weight, and find myself all over again.

The knee replacement has turned out terrifically and I recommend it to anyone needing it. I just wish I had done the other one at the same time. Being 24/7 stoned on oxycontin and oxycodone for a month and a half is somewhat dangerous in my view and going through it again is daunting. I think it changed me, or at least for awhile.

best to you,

ph.

Happy birthday! Even if you weren't a climbing legend, I would still enjoy talking to you at local slideshows and whatnot- one of the losses for me moving away from Berkeley. You are very approachable and positive.

Happy birthday, Peter! You're a class act with a big heart. Thanks for coaching me on offwidth on Pharoah's Beard back in '75. Damn, you were like a climbing Hercules! Thanks for the writing and contributions on ST. Seems like you're always pitching in to be helpful.

I don't need one of those.

I'm getting a mind and brain replacement from Dr Largo?
