Thanks for the note Lynne - if we ever make it through SD, will definitely try to look you up!

Anders, we will swing through Camp4 afternoon/evening on the 30th to see if we can catch up: have the first couple of nights reserved in North Pines, and will then be moving over to Camp 4.

Cheers

Pete.

Hi Greg,

yes, we will definitely miss seeing you.

Lynne - my mum is here in Switzerland at the moment, and to complete her intense Yos training, she wanted to go out and do some ascending on a line I had fixed up in a big tree....

I wonder how many people have taken up wall climbing after turning 70? Not all that many I guess.

Best to all,

Pete.

Pete, give her a huge hug from me. Your Mum could climb El Cap if she really wanted to. She is an incredible human. We really connected last year. Anytime she wants to visit So Cal she is my guest and my friend. Dude, you are so blessed to have her as a Mom.....Howdy Mom, come visit. Peace, Lynne

it's still a *maaaaaybe* - a lot rides on the next ten days at work as to whether or not i can scam a week off...

i feel spoiled. every time i've been there its been in a private campground, hell last year they even had the road closed to get to yellow pine...i have this warped picture of yosemite as a quiet sentinel beach with a couple bears, bunch of you people...

i will try. its a long drive for one or two nights, but it would be sweet to see y'all...

The FaceLift is probably not a good place and time to dirtbag.

Given the importance of the event to the climbing community, it's a good time for all those involved to behave in innocuous ways. It's simply not the right time and place to indulge in conspicuous behaviour, however tempting it may be. There's free camping, lots of free entertainment and prizes, a chance to be a bit louder at the evening events, and some leniency in terms of our policing ourselves. We have to work a bit for those privileges, but it's a fair trade.

There's still lots of opportunity for fun - no question there. But IMHO the FaceLift isn't the right place for loud behaviour and 'music', illicit substances, excessive drinking, and so on. There've been minor problems, and we don't need any more of them.

I'll be going for the long haul. My girlie will be coming with for half the week while others may show up for the weekend.

Unfortunately I don't know too many people who will be there. Guess I'll be a wandering loaner till I can hook up with some good peeps. I signed up and will be staying in Crane Flat but still am not sure how that all works. I got a confirmation Email from Ken but no details as to how to check in etc...

Anyone know how the camping situation works???

Salamanderizer, the information on the YCA website simply says "The park entrance fee will be waived for FaceLift participants". Which presumably means that you have to tell them at the entrance gate that you're there for the FaceLift, which would generally have to be in the period September 22nd - 27th.
http://www.yosemiteclimbing.org/

Based on experience from the last three years, my guess is that:
All the campgrounds except Yellow Pines will have a ranger or host, at a kiosk. Not all the sites in a given campground are for the FaceLift, except Yellow Pines for part of the time.
When you arrive (preferably on the day you said you'd arrive) identify yourself to the ranger (picture ID required), tell them you're with the FaceLift and have a place in that campground. That should do the job, and they'll sign you in. If they have problems figuring it out e.g. list incorrect or missing, get them to call their office.
If at all possible, don't arrive too late. Given that every tent and every vehicle has to have a ranger-issued tag, self-service isn't a good idea, and in some campgrounds (Camp 4) the rangers are gone by 5 PM or so.
We haven't used Crane Flat or Tamarack Flat in the past, but I assume the setup there would be parallel.
For Yellow Pines, I gather the plan is to have our own volunteer camp hosts, to check people in, make sure that the only people staying there are supposed to be there, and to generally keep an eye on things. Last year showed we need to take a more active role in managing ourselves. (There are also generic camp hosts there, but they seem to be relatively low profile unless there are problems.)

These are informed guesses, and I'm sure Ken has more evolved plans and can flesh it out. For example, I think there's some group camping at Tamarack, and if so, maybe we'll have a volunteer host/shepherd there too.

Given the ethos of the event, hopefully those in Crane and Tamarack will do their best to car pool, e.g. come in together each morning, return in the evening after the social event. It may take a little coordinating, but should be a good way to make new friends.

It's not all toil toil, what with evening social events and entertainment. Also, it's quite acceptable to go climbing or for a hike (well, within reason) - as long as you clean up the climbing area or trail, all is well. A few have been known to sneak off for an afternoon's rest or chores or adventure, too.

Well, I love the campfire music. We started early with the kids. Jillie and The Cowboy and I and others sang Ittsie Bittsie Spider and Noah's Ark etc. @ 9pm Andy or Bugsy or other guitar players took over and we played and sang. It was awesome. I learned the tambourine which has been with me ever since then.

Sooooo, long story short, imho the campfire music has nadda to do with loud behaviour, illicit drugs and excessive drinking.......Music is a gift of the gods and gives to us much food for the heart and soul. Peace, lynnie

I'm not taking that as an uninvite, but my kind dropped one rung on the ladder.
