I don't remember anyone dying on those things except for the past few years. WTF?
Citune....I like Don Williams headstone. I want that for when I go meet my maker. Albeit not on Breithorn.

I don't see the cable breaking either. Period.
And comparing this to the rockfall incident is apples and oranges. And you address that, as you contradict yourself, by saying this - " If you're going to install equipment for others to use, you're doing so with the applied assumption that you're doing so in a proper and safe manner." That really sums up the reason that his would be a bad lawsuit, if the cable was the culprit - either through breaking or the pole pulling out.

Sorry, CC - I have nothing but sympathy for the family and friends of the man who died, whatever the causes.
We don't know everything that happened yet. It seems premature to come to any conclusion about what went wrong, if anything, or whether the NPS could or should do anything else there with regard to public safety.

Nefarius,
I think you missed my point. Maybe I could have been clearer. I cited the Glacier Point suit not as an example of equipment failure, etc., but only for the proposition that a single lawsuit doesn't always result in the NPS preventing access, closing a trail, etc.
Also, I don't think I contradicted myself since I said I couldn't see the cables breaking. No way. As a result, his suit would have to be based on some other suspect claim, which is really just code for contributory negligence. Sadly, that would appear to be what this case is about: going up in bad weather and coming down when the rock was wet. What I meant in my first post was that IF the cable broke, then he would have a strong case, but since that didn't happen here (as far as we know), I think the poor guy is out of luck.
In any event, a very sad set of circumstances. My condolescenses to his family.

Its ok Mighty.
Its just the bad press for the Park, which should only be getting thank you notes saying how wonderful the visit was!
Its the most famous rock on the planet and we have to accept the
reality that some are going up the cables in the rain storm.
Which means they'll be coming down in the rain storm.
Suggest the Park Senior Management be made to go 'down'
the Half Dome cables in a rain/hail storm to think up some improvements.

Ahh... Sorry, Fat Dad. I mis-read/misunderstood. Sorry. Makes more sense, coupled with your second post.
Sad event either way. This has been a really difficult couple of weeks.

the cables take away the "sierra club" atmosphere of that route, so why not just chisel some dang steps in there?
would save a ton of hassle, and you could get killed year round?
hey, are there grounding straps coming off the main cables?
have not been up there since, 1964, 9 years old, got shut down by weather half way up the cables.
made it on stream water and one of those huge hershey bars.
middle of summer, only saw two other people coming down can you believe it?

This is a stupid argument.....Life has hazards....GIVEN!....If you fook up, you Die....GIVEN!....Dude is not of my tribe, therefore I'm indifferent. If he can break that cable, he can save his own mighty self.
No shortage of Noob tourons. Bring 'em.
Their bodies will litter the hillsides.Especially if they're French.

Lots of "personal safety equipment" lawyers out there. They will go for the deep pockets. If I were one I would go for the land owners/managers.

Man, this thread is a real mixed bag. So, appropriate or not, whatever that means, it seems behooving to mention that Brutus of Wyde wrote the book on this topic. Words to live by, and no joke... though damn funny.
