Agreed that surfing/ climbing cultures are different and that climbing is better. I'd add that as a group surfers are xenophobic, less intelligent and more prone to violence than climbers.
But waves must nonetheless be ridden. Best ways to avoid problems are: (1) don't surf with teenagers, this basically means don't surf in southern california; (2) Don't surf at top notch spots until you are ready. Waves are limited resource, if you blow waves, or worse yet cause others to blow waves, during the swell of the season, dagger eyes or worse will be forthcoming;(3) don't paddle out and start gunning for every wave. Go with the flow; (4) if there are already 4000 guys in the water, find another spot; (5) as we've eluded to upthread, go somewhere you don't have to worry too much about all of this to learn!

dogtown is right. its Jaws, a break near paia off the north shore of maui that gets HUGE in the winter.
Cortes Bank gets similarily sized waves but its much more of a mission to get out there and less consistent than hawaii is.
Mavericks is meaner looking haha.

Surfers more prone to violence than climbers?
That may be true!
Climbers are much more egotistical ! BIG WAVE surfer have brass balls, it’s like high ball bouldering. Same shit! But Big Wave dudes have more chicks. And make more money professionally.
I love both,Cheers Bruce.

Surfers are certainly more violent than climbers. I've seen many beefs in the water turn to fisticuffs but I have never seen fights( personally) over climbs. I have heard stories but pretty rare. As a grom growing up in the early seventies, surfing around S.B. you had to watch your sh#t. I remeber staying in the water way after dark after ranch locals chased my friend down the beach throwing rocks (we hiked in) at him. Even though the surf culture sucks ( that's why I moved to the mountains- also the great white wave lasts all winter ya!!) I still surf every chance I get and most trips I take are to surf locals. Respect the locals, don't be a barney, and if you don't surf - don't start :)

Look Eastside; if you got the good’s both in the surfing world and the climbing world you will have respect. If you don’t then you are a kook !
Period,Bruce.

At one point there was controversy in the surfing community regarding being towed in to catch a big wave. Old school surfers maintained that reading the break, paddling in and catching a fast moving monster were all an essential part of the surfing experience. The debate reminded me of the Sport vs Trad debate in the climbing community. Does anyone know if the towing in controversy has been resolved?

Thanks for all the great clips. I love to watch that stuff.
Big wave surfing is the most awe-inspiring off all sports.

I, too, was reminded of the sport/trad schism by surfing's stylistic debates...
There was a pretty good discussion of it in the only surfing book I ever read - North Shore Chronicles: Big Wave Surfing in Hawaii by Bruce Jenkins.

drljefe- as a kid,I surfed El Cap point alot , if you know the break its pretty rocky. If you surfed there ( back in the seveties) with a leash the boys would not let you have a wave! I sure screwed up some fine sticks on the rocks there! Also, you know the wave in the "glassy" thread? one of my fav waves!

FP? Try the Potato Patch. You won't get hassled there- not by humans at least!
I've surfed El Cap on an "Eddie" swell that had many other spots maxxed out, and it was only head high. But boy, was it ever roping. I go hood and warpaint style, activate my "cloaking device", and try not to blow it.
The Big Sur guys, with their "heirloom" spots, are gnarly. Ever had your clothes sh!t on? Not worth it- they can have it. Sometimes respect doesn't bring respect, which is a bummer.

fullers can be nasty with the locals, I love willow crk and sand dollar. El Cap does't break often but when it's on it's a BARRELL!!

I rolled up to Willow once and it was going off. I was alone. The boyz were hanging, you know, muddy trucks and vans, gun racks, mangey dogs. There were only a few guys out and it looked so good. I suited up and decided to ride my one board that was ready to go- except it was kinda obviously a "down south" board. I was all self conscious and had to walk right by the boyz. I was just waiting for them to hassle me. Sure enough, one yells out "hey- nice booties hahahaha". Problem was, I wasn't wearing any! Now I was really self conscious, just knowing these guys would be watching me, waiting for me to blow it. Luckily, first wave, I got barrelled. Ended up having an amazing session. What a beautiful spot.
