Jeff, you have been one of my heros since i found a copy of "ice world" in the library as a kid. I only have more admiration seeing the amount you do to give back to the community and the style with which you face this latest challenge.
I have a much less serious chronic disease (type I diabetes) myself and i want to pass on some words of hope I recently ran across.
I went to a lecture by Leroy Hood, one of the fathers of modern biology (and a one time climber of the Nose of El Captain). 2009 is shaping up to be a huge year for large scale genetics (the number of completely sequenced human genomes will go from ~1 to ~100 or more) and Dr Hood identified degenerative genetic diseases as the area likely to see the most immediate benefit from these new datas; your body knows how to be healthy, scientists just need to identify and thwart the pathway that is causing it not to be.
Hang in there, there are a lot of very smart people working hard on this.

Jeff,
I got in on this thread a little late, as usual, but I wanted to say how much I appreciated you visiting me in the hospital here in San Diego when I had my accident four years or so back. I was really grieving hard the loss of use of my legs due to a spinal cord injury. Sitting in the sun outside of the hospital and shooting the sh#t with my idol Jello raised my spirits enormously. For that I am greatful my friend! Wishing you good health and happiness and don't bust your ass on the Segway!
Your pal,
Steve

Countless are the people you have and continue to inspire, Jeff. If anyone has proven through their life's accomplishments that they're up to the kind of challenges you're facing now, it's you.
You're in my thoughts often.
Take care, and enjoy that Segway as spring brings longer sunny days!

Hey Jeff,
Thanks for the update.
The good news is you can give us an update. The bad news is you can give us an update.
Good news that the Docs and the alternative healers and your powerful self can focus on stalemating and even healing the right ailment.
More power to you -- you've already got so much.
Since I saw you I've been writing even more. And when I think of you I always wish you the same.
Race you -- to see who can get his book out first. And I'd gladly throw the match, but we both know that's not how these things work.
So here's to your work. Get that big heart into print.
I got to ride a Segway. Belonged to a client and I zoomed around a parking lot. 20 second learning curve. 30 tops. Surprisingly fast. Fun!
You'll be wanting studded snow tires for it.
Love you,
Doug

Love you back...

Jello,
My most sincere prayers for you.
You know me not, doesn't matter, but I recall only hearing the best about you from Jim Donini in a semi-private slide show at his house in Leavenworth, WA, regarding your climb on Latok(?) with him. I recall back in 1980 or so, it seemed out of this world to me then. Incredible images of your team's bivy in a tent on a incredibly small vertical pillar of ice and snow. So remote, so high, and so much adventure. You guys gave me inspiration and dreams to follow.
When we talk about gifted "real climbers" who can do it all, and then do it all well, you are one of the greats.
Please take care and stay close to your family and friends through this time.

(All you Lowes sure have had massive impacts on our beloved sport, and the brother (sister) hood of the rope. I have always gone LOWE with my packs. Your brother makes a quality product that lasts a lifetime, as well as the camera case line. I think I will be able to pass on my packs to my son and daughter, although I'm sure they will want their own new ones :-))

Hey, Jeff ...
Very sad to hear the news in this thread.
Very good news to hear from you, personally, on the matter, though.
We're rooting for you and sending a big gob of good juju to you. Hang in there ... you're loved and revered.
