Chamonix and Mt Blanc are the heart and soul of the alpine arts. I never got around to climbing there 'til the mid-80's, but once I got a taste, I went back often. Where else can you catch the 9 am 'phrique up the Midi, collect some baggage you've left at a local hut, then head for the long ski down the Vallee Blanche, stopping along the way to nip up the beautifull Super Couloir, joining your sweetie back in Cham for wine and fondue?

The Frank Sacherer memorial has put my mind in and around the Alps a lot lately. The irresistable draw of the great faces even pulled Frank into the mix after swearing off frozen foolishness...Bump!

Oh, Ghastly Rubberfat, how we miss you!
No, seriously, though we have a strange way of showing it.

OK Steve, I'll take the bait. However this is probably not the photo you had in mind!NOTE: Two very good reasons to pay attention in French class.
QUESTION: Why is Chris smiling?
Heh heh.

So, you know the feeling when you showed up to the Valley/camp4 for the first time...thinking about the history, the hardmen, the fabled routes? Cham is like that times 10. Its is the center of the universe for all Alpinism for me. I felt something in my core when i jumped off the bus in that place. It was special. Sappy bulshit I know but...

nice deep dark red colored beef dried at altitude....perfect with some tomme de savoie and some fresh bread.
thinking about cham makes me hungry.
and that cow above is a milk cow. real milk. good chance she was breeding up some nice veal that summer, too.
i'd love to go back to cham, despite the crowds. especially if i could actually get some decent weather.

When I climbed O Sole Mio on the Grand Capucin, I ran into Stevie and Laurence who I had met at Crusher's place in Boulder. They flew past us to attempt to free some insane looking roof, and later in the day we heard shouting. Stevie was screaming at a guide about something. As my experiences with Chamonix guides increased, I found myself admiring Stevie even more than at first. It is not difficult to find oneself almost coming to blows with one of those turds.
Some of the best rock routes I've ever experienced have been on Chamonix granite. Some of the strangest (and best) experiences I've had traveling have been there. Cruising around town during all of those rain days eating pastries and checking out the French chicks . . ohhh, la, la there's something about the French ladies that is so enticing . . watching the helicopter fly in and out constantly to the hospital that we were camping next to . . having a Croatian friend take a 65 foot ground fall and walk out of the hospital a day later . . watching a couple of French get avalanched to their deaths in the Gervasutti Couloir . . amazing mixed climbing on golden granite placing bomber Friends . .seeing the biggest avalanche I've ever witnessed anywhere cut loose below us as we climbed perfect cracks on the Blatiere . .
I could go on and on. Always happy to return to the States after 3 weeks in Cham, but I'd go back there in an instant.

They gave you your independence, the roots of your constitution, and the Statue of Liberty.
Ha, how's that working out for us?
