Spencer, I have heard that some of the springs are closed (and apparently dangerous).

The place I'm thinking of was in fine condition though this last September - the non-commercial pools near Keough. Turn west on Keough Hotsprings Rd. and look for the power lines. Its maybe a couple hundred yards north - follow the lines and you'll be able to figure out where to drive in. The pools are directly below the buzzing wires - a bit unnerving to think what would happen if the towers were to fall over as you soak in the pools.

Roughly here on google maps: http://tinyurl.com/564jah

Haven't been there. Sounds kinda spooky under the wires, but then again hot springs are usually always good. I'll have to check it out.

There is a place on old hwy 32 outside of Chico where I used to go party with my friends. It is right under some crackling power lines. If you barely touch someone elses' nose with your finger you could make a little blue spark. Fun times... =)

Is that true of Hot Creek? Is it closed?

EDIT

from wikipedia

Since May 2006, springs in and near the most popular swimming areas have been geysering or intermittently spurting very hot, sediment-laden water as high as 6 feet (2 m) above the stream surface. At times this geysering activity is vigorous enough to produce “popping” sounds audible from hundreds of feet away. The geysering usually lasts a few seconds and occurs at irregular intervals, with several minutes between eruptions. The unpredictability of this hazardous spring activity led the U.S. Forest Service to close parts of the Hot Creek Gorge in June 2006[3], and the closure has remained in effect as of spring 2008.

Cool Spencer, that pdf (to the link you posted) shows two photos taken at Hot Creek, the second photo, taken five seconds after the first, shows a 'geyser' shooting into the air out of the water.

Thought I'd bump this one...

If you had the chance to spend a spring->fall in the Bishop/Independence area, would you? And where would you live? Access to Independence and climbing are highest priorities.

What a bad memory! After this thread's input, I applied for the transfer to Bishop, had to interview/compete for the spot...won the spot, two weeks before transfer became "official" the f#$%^ california state budget shenanigans started up again and the district director said "hold off on filling that position until..."

Well, until forever apparently. I ended up quitting the job about a year later because the agency was in shambles, my pay had been cut by 50% and I was pissed off with the whole sordid affair. Bought a house in Joshua Tree, been unemployed for about a year, and have received a couple of job offers in the last week that are tentative until background checks go through....one in Yuma, AZ one in Riverside. Both pay very well, with good benefits (like 4 weeks paid vacation, full med/dental, etc). So it looks like I'm headed back to the I.E. (never thought I'd look forward to moving back to the IE, but with Yuma as the other choice, well....)

Won't start working for another couple months at least, trying to stretch it until Josh season winds down, but it's nice to know I'll have some income again in the semi-near future.

Lived in Squaw Valley for 6 years and have been here in Bishop for the last 11. What I like to tell people about Bishop is that it is easy to visit the snow if so inclined, but usually don't have to live in it. The monster storm is now winding down and the 1.5 inches of snow we got two days ago is almost completely gone. One who was living in Truckee would have had their entire lives revolving around snow.

Truckee is a nice scene location.
Close to major city's, tons of skiing, boating if you want to go to the lake, and lots of nice climbing, or for a "trip" head to South Lake.
The Truckee people do have a super f*cking elitist attitude that they can shove up their pee hole.

How bout Boulder, CO instead? Less hillbillies and college girls too.
You wanna crunch granola, then JedBishop. You wanna pay $12 and up for a burger, JedTruckee. Though Jedport, is about halfway to each...

Just curious, as a Canadian who has access to pretty darn good fishing, I was wondering how you fly fishermen [anglers] defined "good" fishing around Bishop?

What kind of fish do you fish for, what's an average size, and what's a really good one?

Cheers.

I'm with The Sooze on this one.

Bishop is where I had the time of my life (will never forget) and there is way to much to climb in that area, so.. Bishop is the place!

Cheers Will
