Allie,

I hope you saw my earlier post.
Do you have any plans or contacts at the Survival school to let
them know?

If you would like, you can e-mail me some info
and I will make sure it gets into the Survival
newsletter.
His name, and his class number if you can find it.
Any other info you would like to include about where he
taught, awards/medals etc. You can make it informative or simple, whichever you prefer. There are probably classmates of his that would like to know.
I know he graduated at Stead and not the Fairchild Instructor
course. That makes him one of the true originals from our
career field and his passing should be recognized among
Survival Instructors.
All our best wishes from the Survival Brotherhood,
Bruce

Allie,

“Know this well… your dad’s humor touched many, many lives.” His writings, his illustrations, will be sadly missed. May peace and love be with you and your family, during this difficult, caring time.

Allie, is there any charity that was important to your dad?

With so many SuperTaco members touched by him, we could probably put together a pretty decent fund in his name.

Allie,

my deepest condolences to you and your mom. I'm am so truly saddened to read of his passing. I'm in tears.

I've been so blessed to be the subject of many of his cartoons. Most involved sushi and sushifest and because of his work our fests were that much better and that much more fun.

I wasn't going to open the forum this morning. But when I did and saw this post at the top I knew it wasn't going to be one of his amazing cartoons.

I pretty much lost it when I went back to the home page to see someone had bumped the appreciation thread I authored. I cried the entire way to my yoga class. I dedicated my practice this morning to Allen.

This is the first cartoon I recall made with me as part of the content:

A while back I dug up some of the cartoons related to sushi and made a little web page:

Ouch! rest in peace. I'll see you on the other side....

Doug

Allie,

Sincerest condolences to you and your family. This caught me by surprise. I did not know your dad was ailing of late. He posted like a strong, young man which is testament to his spirit and soul. His youthfulness and humor will be missed here on ST.

Kind Regards...

Ouch! was a welcome note of whimsy and laughter in our little world, and will be sorely missed. I hope Allie will be able to tell us more about our friend, but I'm sure we'll all understand if that can't be.

I never had the honour to be lampooned in one of Ouch!'s cartoons, at least as far as I know. The B&W photo upthread was posted to one of the FaceLift threads, only about two weeks ago. It looks like it's a honeymoon photo, or perhaps one from early in married life, from the late 1940s or early 1950s. In front of Bridalveil Falls, appropriately enough. So we finally had a picture of Ouch! (and Mrs. Ouch!), we just didn't know it. (Edit: It turns out that the photo was re-posted; it was first posted about a year ago.)

When I first visited SuperTopo, it took a bit of effort to get intelligible instructions on how to post photos. (Crimpie helped - the geeks tend to be rather cryptic.) I noticed that other people had the same challenge, and so developed some detailed instructions, which I send to people whenever they post a request. At the end, I always put in the following: "For practical purposes, a photo on ST is in the public domain - if nothing else, Ouch! may add a bear to it." My little joke on Ouch! Sadly, I'll now have to change that.

Wow!

After reading Allie's bio on OUCH! it turns out he was a total bad ass hard man with a huge compassionate heart.

All glories to OUCH!

Ah man....this is terrible news. Ouch was one of a kind.

God bless him.

I don't know what else to say....this is saddening.

Hey gang,

At the Survival school, we had to do climbing and rope rescue stuff as part of our training. Does anyone know if Ouch climbed after his military service, or was he just here for the love of the whacky community?

Just a note: The reason some of us knew him as Sam is because if you emailed him he used "Sam Martin" in his email address.

LOL!!! That sneaky little bugger!

Allie:

This feels every bit like a death in the family.

We all form an image of the person we would like to know or to become.

We were so lucky to have had a chance actually to meet him here.

The man gave much of himself to us and there was a self effacing paternal flair to his contributions; sincere humor is of inestimable value to quality of life.
Condolences to his family.

Our family would like to send our condolences to you and your family Allie... Your father was one of the finer posters and spirits on this forum and will be heavily missed. Although I did not know him other then his postings on this forum, he postings and sense of humor always made me laugh... Its clear he was a great person and had a kind soul, not many people go out of their way to help people in this world any more, although he did... the world has just lost one of its gems- Our best wishes to you and your family- Craig Calonica and family

What a loss! The man was a true gentleman and had a great sense of humor. He was smart, too. I learned some good stuff from some of his serious posts.

Allie, thank you so much for sharing his bio with us. You are getting his memorial here. We are all sad. That is probably why he said he did not want one.

But when someone leaves people need to get together to share the happy memories, even with tears in their eyes (yup, mine too). I like so many others knew him only from his posts.

I hope you have a real memorial to add to this virtual one. It is for the survivors - to honor or even to reminisce and enjoy retelling or even hearing for the first time things they share.

Let's hope we all leave as well loved as he did.
