What luck! Tomorrow I have to go to the Urologist to have a lump on my left nut looked at- I think it is something called a Spermocele so its not a cancer thing- anyway they will probably have Outside in the waiting room.
Sh#t Jeff, don't let it get you down, you've been the swinging dick of North American climbing for four DECADES! Your posts on ST have been so great- I was always flattered when we could correspond.
Sounds like you have a lot bigger fish to fry right now than this.
For Peter, ambition is a tricky thing, but that will be his cross to bear.
When I think of Jeff Lowe, I think Latok and for me that says it all.
Ride the rocket baby- because no one ever did an article about me ever, so take it as a wonderful compliment.

HAHA, Outside must be desperate.
I've only ever read it at the dentist's office. What a load of crap that rag is.
On the other hand, I have met you Jello, talked with you a while with Arno once, and heard your talk on climbing a few years ago, plus a few phone conversations not so long ago.
I don't see how anyone who has met you or talked with you or heard one of your programs could give any credence to that article, but that still leaves a lot of people whose only image of you will come from Outside.
Therefore you should make some response, mainly to set the record straight.
To any who think a point by point rebuttal would be weak or defensive, get your head out of your ass right now, as a rebuttal is the only way to correct the falsehoods.
A lawyer friend tells me that denying accusations, especially false ones, is pretty much a requirement in legal matters. Many people will assume that if you don't deny a claim, then it must be true. It's totally stupid for them to make that assupmtion, but that's how people are.
Anyway it's pretty sh!tty of a friend to write such a thing at a time like this for you.

Jello,
As a weekender who is also a physician, and the same age as you, I read the article with interest.
Your many accomlishments are not dimmed one bit in my mind by what this article said.
In fact as someone who has always been amazed by your accomplishements (including off the mountain by rebounding after business losses that many afterward could never have garnered the courage to try again)I continue to be amazed by your resilency.
You obviously, despite a horrible illness, continue forward with goals and the energy to accomplish them.
Basically my take from the article is that you are human, but one who continues to set a standard in life that we should all try to emulate.

Mr. Jello,
History is rife with friends betraying friends, I am sorry it happened to you.
Several points: A man is known by the life he lives and the history he makes.
When I first came onto the Taco several months ago and posted a Thread called Fantasy Jobs....one day a person named Jello logged on and welcomed me to ST and said some nice and encouraging things.
You didn't know me, and I had no idea who you were....but I did appreciate kindness to a stranger. Speaks a multitude of who you are.
Next: Having served on some politcal land use commissions where I live I was blasted out of the water a few times by the local rags. I had to really struggle,,,,,do I defend myself or not. Reflected, thought and prayed about it.
Not saying this should be your path, we and our circumstances are all diverse. However, bottom line I felt like I just needed to let my actions speak louder than words....actions Past, present and future.
For whatever you refute, there are many other "bombthrowers" out there. You can't manage to address them all if you want a sane life.
Let your friends, et al help out in this area. Stay cool and know in your inner being just who you are. It will refect outward.
Thanks for being nice....to a newbie! OBTW were you or any of your family doing Lowe products at one of the bouldering contests in the 70's or 80's in San Diego County? Lowe sure sounds familiar to me. This person would have had darkish not real long hair and was stocky.
Sincerely, Lynne

I agree 100% with Lynne.
You can't deal with all the bombthrowers.
Just concentrate your fire on the ones that approach throwing distance.

Maybe Pete is right and sees something that you don't see. Maybe it's not the true you but is what you show him in your actions or words or lack of same. Maybe he is a jerk and you should never forgive him. Maybe you act differently with him than with others?
Whatever...
Go ask the guy why he wrote this and why he thinks you are the person he described. Don't ask your fan club. That is a waste of your time. Go to the source and talk it out, fight it out, or break -up (so to speak). Don't bother with the internet. All you will get is strangers making dumb suggestions.

If Pete Takeda is really a friend, and if he honestly thought you were suicidal, then why would he publish an article about you which he knew you would find hurtful?

hey there dear ol' jello.. .say, i may be too late chipping in here... but i do have a bit to share...
first off, something very bad, similar, but not in papers, as i am not famous :) ---happened to me about 5 different times in my life... and each time i "fell on my face" before and prayed and fasted for three days, to god to vindicate my good name... as, there was nothing i could say or do, ---and if i did try to DO or SAY anything as to my name or heart being innocent, the folks were the type that distort things because they were seriously lacking the ability not to distort and needed the power that came from it (it was very sad)
well, it took time, in each cause, and in three cases, thus far my name was vidicated in such a strong powerful way, that the other that distorted the "situation" was "completely exposed" in ways to amazing to even fully explain... a soverieng act of god, is the best it gets, jello...
one situation is still pending, though in the process of being "righted" ---it is a very long and hard ongoing one(this is my name being slandered to my children from my ex)(very very serious, when dealing with the emotions of childrend, even if they are grown-ups)....
and the other is a recent, kind of unbelievable strange thing that had occured, that really shocked me... (it is still pending, as it is recent).... but THIS i KNOW, now, that god is for me...
so dear jello, the good lord works BEHIND the scenes and vidicates in true honest ways that do not hurt anyone... and it comes in powerful ways that truly shine for the innocent...
it just takes time... like fruit needs to ripen... or the waterfall that finally breadks through a dammed-up pass, and brings long awaited to life to the "dying land"...
but---god has never failed me, in the midst of these things that had hurt and with such terrible damage, and to my good name, which is ALL that i have, as "silver and gold" have i none, (hmmm, and not even a good checking account, but an honest one)...
AND... when the vindication came.. the beauty, and the kindness of god, and the amazing powerful protection of it all will never ever leave my heart, unamazed, or ungrateful... i was touched in a very very deep way.... and will remain so...
say, there... jello... i reckon my next prayer project is FOR YOU.... MY GIFT, now to your good name... i must join in and help you on your way.... as i do know you are fighting an illness and it may be hard to fast... BUT--- i sure reckon you can "fall on your face" before the good lord above... and see just how "mighty in battle" the good lord can be... to help the poor hurting heart of one ol' jello....
god bless, there...
say, you never know... someday, too, you may see a an article in an even higher magazine, overcoming the lower magazine, in a most kind and humble way...
**sorry to hear that this happened from a friend... and yes, forgive him... he may see things "distorted" somehow, and---it could be becuase of things in his life that happened, or that you dont fully know of... forgiveness is the honest and well thing to do... good for you, jello...

Oops. A little thread drift here, but neebee, about that ex talking you down to your kids, that happens so much that it is recognized legally as parental alienation, it is taken seriously, and you can do something about it in court.

hey there dirtineye...
say, i never knew that... but my kids are adults now... so it has gone past the damage stage... it will take time, and opportunities...
actually, a month ago, i was graced with a "miracle" trip by my dad's help... and my ex was not down there (texas)... and hopefully my boys are learing things are not what they had been told...
thanks so much for letting me know that, though... as i have a dear friend and she is having such troubles as to her young boy now, and it is confusing the boy and taking away his security...
okay, dear jello-----we did drift just a mite... we are back on course now:
all points, north, onward to victory....

Hi Jello,
I didn't have time to read all the the responses, but would like to chime in on your thread and give my advice.
Sorry if it repeats what others have said.
I come from a journalist background.
I like the short letter to the editor idea.
Just state the truth, calmly and objectively, of the isues that weren't accurate in the article. Leave emotions out of it. Leave room, where appropriate, for different perceptions of ambiguous circumstances.
But send him the facts. You, your friends, and the magazine's readers deserve the truth. Period.
Any editor that won't publish factual corrections isn't worth his/her lunch allowance.
Don't speculate on the author's reasons for inaccurate reporting - let the reader do that.
You might also let him (especially if he's your friend!) know that the sh#t ain't true!
Oh yeah - and then, once you've made the effort to get the facts known, be mellow, forgive the author for any non-malicious inaccuracy, and move on in a positive manner.

Jeff,
as a fellow former Utahn, and one who tried to follow in your footsteps here and there, I have nothing but the deepest respect for you and your accomplishments.
The media is in a bussiness to sell and they do that by gloriifying sh&& that is incorrect.
Keep your chin up and forge onward.

Jeff...the same thing happened to me in a profile done by Climbing back in 1989...sensationalism was replace by reality and it was written by a long time friend who still is one. It was hard to digest and really affected me in a negative way. I asked to see the article when it done and when I did see it was to late and already printed. Funny...once those things about you are printed people take it for truth. Sometimes...nothing could be further from the truth.
Sadly what could have been something positive turned quite ugly for me.
Live and learn...have you contacted Pete...I see him in Boulder?
Hope all is well and take care.
Bob
PS...I don't even own a copy of the article!
Edit...Jeff...people our age become quite reflective about our lives and what we could have done, what we have done and what we are doing. We all made mistakes and we all have done things in the heat of moment that maybe looking back in retrospect we wouldn't do now. Part of the game of growing and learning and having that experience in the bank.
I'm not the person I was 30-20 or even five years ago...I have made mistakes and moved on...luckily I had my wife and kids to keep me balanced and in line. You gotta like the person inside your skin...
I never really confronted Allison about the article because I knew what I was and what I meant to the people around me (family/friends) and over time just let slide...

Vent here with us, your people, Jello. If it seems important you can always write that POV piece for Outside. I have wondered about his veracity since reading Pete's Scarpelli article where there were some facts that didn't seem quite correct by my memory, and it made be wonder if he's not above editing the truth to make a better story.Might be how he sees it, for all I know... Always seemed like a good guy, to me though.
Jody has a point, too.
