[Dang if a 100k is nothing why don't you send it to me.]

I think it's a matter of how you want to live.

Fly to Greece, St-Trop, live in NYC, LA, hit the clubs, nice restaurants, new gear, then naw 100K aint sh#t.

but listen to Karl B. live in India, or Indonesia, or Africa or a few quiet places in South America. Live a good life without new stuff all the time.

Money invested at 10% doubles every 7 years! Wait 14 years and you're pulling $30K doing not much work; depending where and how you live that's a lot, and you'll only be 40.

100K used wisely could help you retire 25-30 years before most people.

Good luck.

Haggis,
Good point; I guess with all the talk of gold and metals these days, I was using them synonymously.

Whatever you do, avoid financial advisors, investment planners, etc. Put it somewhere safe, in an interest bearing trust or savings account, and forget you have it.

Oh, but first, spend at least 5K on booze, hookers, drugs, and a couple monthlong climbing trip. Ok, 10k.

Hi everyone,

My name is Thomas Cavanagh, and when I'm not climbing, I'm trying to earn my PhD in psychology at Colorado State University in Fort Collins.

Sounds like you are investing in an education.

really I would buy property. there are some really good deals right now and if the travel bug bites you, you can rent it out. 100,000 isn't a lot unless you move somewhere it is like south america....

I would, first and foremost, not listen to anyone on Supertopo about what to do with a bunch of cash. Interesting to think about, but most likely horrible investment ideas.

Stinky is absolutely right: Spend it on good times and women. At your age you'll still be able to enjoy both, and you'll never regret it when you're an old codger who's grown philosophical. 100K today ain't nothing anyway unless it's spent on pleasure.

Not bad advice from Ketchup (except for the girlfriend part), and I'm an attorney who handles lots of estates where people suddenly get boatloads of cash.

Whoever said to sock away 60% and have fun with the rest was pretty spot on. I quit a corporate job in my mid-20s, and traveled around Asia, went trekking in Nepal, went to India, etc., then came back home and traveled around the West alot. Never regretted a minute of it. In fact, with my life as it is now, I'd probably never get a similar chance to travel until I retire, when I'll be too old to do the same stuff anyways.

In fact, I wish I would have traveled more. I don't know why I didn't climb Denali, or Mt. Huntington or some peaks in the Andes or solo the Captain, etc. I think I thought I had to be responsible with at least some of the cash I had saved, though it was a much smaller pool than yours. If I had a willing accomplice kicking me in the ass to go someplace though, that would have helped, but all of my partners were chained to jobs. A girlfriend would just be an anchor to home, which you don't want now.

Maybe we haven't heard from the OP since he died in a pool of his own vomit but, while I'm happy I did what I did, I would have liked to do more of it.

Hookers, that's what Charlie would do.

Or buy that sportsmobile floating around here for 50k cash.

Park it in Merced and buy Hookers twice a week, for the next 7.5 years.
