Thank You Chris for bumping this thread. It is ST Hall of Fame material. Jeff's recounting is more transcendent the captivating. It did hold me captive but it took me places I didn't expect to go. This is really one of my favorite pieces of writing. Kudos to Jello!!

Real fine writing, not too heavy but respectfully awed tone and condensed well so it's always luring the reader on. Edit, schmedit...
Tough to lose a parent; and even though it's been quite a while now, it's still a powerful influence on you. It's a nice sentiment that he's your guide.

Bumpitude.
As we all know, Jello has gone some places and seen some things the rest of us will never know. No matter what you think of his version of the events of this expedition, it marks him clearly as an explorer of human potential in the mountain world and a writer of great honesty and sensitivity

Now that your story has brought tears to my eyes the rest of my day will be more

During Reinhold Meissner's keynote speech at the AAC dinner last night, he told of a situation where he was alone in challenging circumstances, and that he had acknoweldged another person there with him that gave him the drive and confidence to get moving and get down. He said he didn't even need to turn to look, he just knew his companion was there. (My apologies if I've rmuddled the facts.)
This reminded me of this story, one of my favorites that I like to come back to again and again.
RM then described the phenomenon that human beings in extreme situations create a mirror of themselves. I suppose that this may have have been scientifically proven in some form.
But my own experience with this sense of guiding companionship hasn't come out of extreme survival conditions, and the presences are very distinct and different than me. I've really only come to realize this since learning who my birth parents were -- to me they each have a unique energy and presence, and when they make themselves known is completely outside of my realm of control (i.e., circumstance-neutral). But looking back over my life, they were there over and over and over -- I was just unable to recognize or connect with them.
I'm curious whether anyone else has experienced something similar, and whether it's generally accepted that these presences are a figment of one's imagination?
Jeff, it was an honor to meet both you and Connie, and congratulations on receiving the literary award. You both have my heartfelt wishes on this journey.
