The newer hard drives are at least 5400 RPM, which give a substantial speed boost over the 4200 RPM models.
Going from 5400 RPM to 7500 RPM does knott give nearly as big a performance increase - knott sure why.
Before you do anything about the lines on the screen, test using an external monitor.
If you can narrow down the problem, it will be a great help in deciding if it's worth fixing.
If it is indeed the logic board, then you have to decide if you want to track down a used
one (again, good luck!), or spend $$$$$ on a new replacement logic board. The labor would
probably be $250 for the replacement at a reputable shop - you might find someone for $50
to $75 an hour on the side. Or you can sack up and do it yourself! It's knott brain surgery...
Climbing rocks is much scarier!

Knott,
That fixit site is cool but the computer they show for the 12 alum. G4 isn't mine. It's way different. Mine has the quick remove keyboard that once you lift it up you can easily remove the ram. I did this along time ago. took it from 256 to 1gig.
Am I wrong about what computer i have?

What model is the other G4?
If it's knott a 12" Powerbook, forget it. What's the processor speed of yours?
Here's a great site:

DR. Knott
For the last couple days my monitor image is 'bouncing, vibrating, and has an intermittent 1/2 inch black border making the the OS screen appear to be a window within the window screen? Time for some routine maintenance I don't know about or Death Knell?

Ok, it really a 15" G4 Ti
The hard drive looks easy enough though, but the logic board, uhh I don't know.

N0_ONE - are you now saying your machine is a 15' Titanium?
Those hard drives are a piece of cake to replace. Just remove the back cover screws and thar she blows...
Wade Icey - What monitor is it? What machine? The more specific the better...

You provided for an entertaining repartee, which is never a waste of time...
If you want to get the data off either machine, start it up while holding down the "T" key
until you see a blue screen with the nuke symbol. If you see that, it is potentially good
news because it means you can plug a FireWire cable from your Mac to another Mac and
access the files as if it were a removable drive. What sort of stuff do you need to save?
If it is porn, perhaps God is punishing you?

I have a 400 Mhz iMac with an aftermarket 7500 RPM drive. It is running Mac OS Tiger 10.4.11,
and it is running rather well with 320 MB RAM. You can get a 80 GB drive for around $40...
It's super easy to install one into a G4 tower. Try the monitor with another machine
and see if the problem persists. You could also slap another video card in there to see
if that makes a difference...

So... I connect the two computer with fire wire, start up main computer, then start up his G4 while holding down the "T" Key?
Then his computer will show up as a disk in finder?
Do I have to set up sharing or networking preferences?
