I think the OP is dead on the spot. Most people aren't looking at the FACTS.
I ran across a video of the Hawthorne Conference (1987) where this issue was most likely first brought up to the national board of external affairs.
The picture quality isn't all that great, but listen to John Chesus' somewhat haunting prediction of 9/11 at 2:23

Apologies to Karl, a while back in the thread I did in fact misidentify the person from the Roswell "incident". The guy I am thinking of was part of the recovery of the remains of what was actually a secret project to try to detect Russian a-bomb tests. Somewhere in here there was talk of reverse-engineered technology in use today. This kind of talk is to me the most laughable of claims. The notion that we can't possibly have thought up whatever technology we are using and have used over our history is unsupportable. For instance, I read a claim that the Egyptians could not have laid out and leveled the ground for the Great Pyramids as accurately as it was done. But any clever buider with water and string could get the ground perfectly flat and the layout perfectly square. Erik Von Daniken made a fortune in the 70s with just such claims. What was his background? Why, con-man of course. Investigation of many claims reveals that is a very common element, financial gain on someones part. I don't deny the possibility of extraterrestrial life, in fact, I'm certain it exists. I believe if we can drop a submarine probe below the ice on Europa something will swim by it. I hope to see this in my lifetime. I also dont think all life is what we commonly define it as. Look at viruses. Are they even alive? They aren't like any other life we know, but their properties are undeniable. Pure energy beings are within my imagination, but would they need machines to get around? Seems unlikely. Much of what is claimed is inconsistent to me,

I think the healthiest attitude is to keep an open mind, know the stance of current science, ufo folks, and religion, and understand they are ALL going to be "wrong"
The one thing the three groups above have in common, and all the rest of us too, is not enough ability to say "We don't know, and what we do know, we don't know completely" During the time of Moses, our current technology was unthinkable and in the realm of magic. It's only been 3000 years and we do that magic now. What would we know in a Million years if we don't kill ourselves first?
Better hope there's aliens. Once you die, you don't live here in the the flesh anymore and that makes you an instant alien. Who really knows what you can and can't do then. If you can't even admit that as a possibility, better quit climbing because this life is fragile and we're all doomed.
