Raydog: Amundson is tough to beat, you are so right but RE:

"Who is ever going to beat that?"

Messner, IMO.

Except that Buhl set the standard for Messner to emulate.

Speaking of Eddie Aikau, very few of the people on this list, if any, gave their life so nobly.

Edwin Moses is rarely mentioned in these "greatest ever" debates but someone who went undefeated for 10 years in international competitions deserves a nod. The hurdles just dont' seem to grab the public's attention.

On the rock IMHO - hands down its Hill, though Porter and Bacher lived in another world from the rest of us.

The incomparable Rell Sunn

"Rell was the quintessential water-woman, excelling at all watersports, including surfing, bodysurfing, spearfishing, and open-water outrigger canoeing. In the early 70's, Rell was instrumental in establishing the Women's Professional Surfing Association and founding the women's pro surfing tour in which she twice finished third in the year end rankings. Also, in a culture where proficiency in the water is widely respected and lifeguards are nearly deified, 1977 found Rell honored by being named Hawaii's first female lifeguard."

She was also a graceful and accomplished hula dancer who taught many youngsters to dance.

Hercules was pretty rad.

"Another episode of his female affairs that stands out was his stay at the palace of King Thespios, who encouraged Heracles to make love to his daughters, all fifty of them, in one night. They all got pregnant and all bore sons. Many of the kings of ancient Greece traced their lines to one or another of these, notably the kings of Sparta and Macedon."

Let's see Rick James top that.

Hearing Rell mentioned here is great. She was everything she is talked up to being and the Queen of Makaha. She affected the entire surf break. I surfed there when she was there and it was peace, it remains my most favored wave of all, a rumbling start, better get right, then a wall of 20M appears to the right, first thought is no aint gonna make it, but you dive in anyway, then you see this incredible wall of water stand up, hold, pause, sweet mother of Jesus I made it, and then comes the back splash, use it to get 20 ft up in the air or bend around it and step off your board onto the sand.
That is Makaha. Rell made it a place where this cracker felt Aloha.

Thanks, God Bless Auntie Rell.

Good list, Bachar.

About Rell Sunn: she also fetched the boys' lost spears, retrieving them from the depths that no one else was willing to freedive down to.

And she fought breast cancer for over ten years and lived to tell about it - always with a smile. Glad you brought her up, she was rad and I wish my girls could have soaked up her smile.

edit to add: she also went to great lengths to encourage kids to surf as a self-esteem builder. A friend in Hawaii told me once that she still enjoys a lot of love for that.
