Thanks Chris,
Many many years ago when I first starting climbing, I looked to your forum for guidance. It was a great resource for me.
Thank you!

^ ^ ^ ^ I'm with tp. . . to an extent.
I sure as sh#t won't miss the snarky exhibitionists, the fully tripped out acid freaks and the negative know-it-alls.
Those of us who've been here through the glory days will always be together.
Ain't nobody deletin' our memories.
To them, I say KEEP THE MAGIC ALIVE.
To the others, I say go suck buttermilk from a dead dog's eye!

EC,
Chatting with you about WPOD was an honor. I'm saddened to see this place go. Seems like some history worth preserving. There were voices at this campfire worth hearing.......

I will say thanks to Chris for starting and maintaining the forum...it’s been fun and i have met quite a few interesting people I otherwise wouldn’t have met.
I have to say, however, that I remain suspicious concerning the real reasons for shutting down the forum.
Meh. rec.climbing, rock climbing.com, supertopo forums. They come, they go. Life goes on.

Yup. It's a mixed bag. Then again, there are many people would never have met if not for this forum. That's what makes me sad. Who will I miss knowing once this place is gone?
They come, they go. Life goes on.
That is true. Yer gonna die.

johntp, I did start a SuperTopo Campfire on FB. Even if you have all the contact info of people, it can be used to announce functions etc.

FB is not a place I want to participate on. I will stay in contact with you via email.
Edit: There are so many people here that have made a difference in my life.
This just sucks.

Perhaps the demise of this forum represents the end of the old, eccentric, anarchistic activities variously lumped under the term "climbing." Miscreants, ne'er-do-wells, vagabonds and scalawags, but of course there were probably many fine people as well....
Climbing has finally made it through a prolonged and painful adolescence, emerging with enthusiastic respectability along with a surge of technical advancement, as it ventures onto the Olympic arena. The first doping scandals have already emerged - how ironic, when certain generations of climbers looked with suspicion on anyone who did not partake.
The Valley-oriented regulars herein have imbued the Forum with the eccentric and the absurd, and that seasoning, along with other regional flavors which combined into the spices of the climbing community, are all going to be absent in competitions. A few personalities hold out, but prowess is all that is noted in the end.
As surfing bifurcated into parallel but distinct paths, competitions and huge wave riding garnered attention, but lifelong diehards still just kept doing their thing in zen reflection mode.
Climbing will abide, perhaps with the momentary blaze of Olympic fervor generating a new crop of insanely talented youngsters, but that may be a blessing in disguise, as the classics will remain, with less attention paid to them. Savor the moves.

Chris and RJ,
Thank you for all you did these past 18 years. You have taught a lot of people how to climb safer, as well as brought a lot of joy to many. I certainly have enjoyed reading the site, benefited a lot from it. A number of climbers read about me (I am a hand surgeon) and I was able to treat a lot of injuries. It was really fun to be able to help fellow climbers.
Thank you thank you thank you
