SAD!

Although the above political cartoon makes fun of Trump’s lying, I continue to be surprised that the 40% of Americans who support him, are not bothered by a President, who constantly lies, & expects them to believe his lies.

Despite Fact Checkers revealing how often & how much Trump lies, it doesn’t bother his supporters, who can’t be so dumb or biased that they actually believe those lies. I hope they are not that dumb, but ?????

Per this article on Trump’s lying ways, he & his henchmen lie because there are no penalties: https://www.yahoo.com/news/plenty-presidents-lie-trump-doesnt-care-catch-090048571.html

Trump and his minions don’t fear the consequences of truth, because they don’t believe those consequences really apply to them. The president doesn’t habitually lie — about Russian election meddling, or about his paying off a concubine, or about what he said on camera or into a tape recorder just yesterday or the day before that — because he thinks the truth will be politically calamitous.

No, he lies because he’s pretty sure he can make you believe whatever he wants you to believe (it worked for a self-promoting developer in the New York tabloid world), and there doesn’t seem to be a penalty for trying.
Now, as I’ve written before, my industry bears a lot of the blame for making this possible. My colleagues in the media often seem to blame Trump for creating and stoking the public’s abject distrust, when in fact it was our own vanity and triviality — the glib cable punditry, the obsession with rumors and ratings — that created him.

But if there’s a burden on journalists to rebuild that trust (and there is), then there’s a burden on you, too, to be a shrewder consumer. Because make no mistake: Trump and his acolytes disdain you, in a way Nixon on his worst day did not.

They don’t think you’re smart enough to recognize truth or care about it. They don’t fear your judgment, because they don’t think you have any.

So by all means, be skeptical of the media — we’ve earned it. But don’t be blind. Don’t be taken in by a demagogue, or the sycophants around him, who would have you believe that everything you read that doesn’t conform to your worldview must be nothing but garbage, because he says it is.

Just like the Bolshies didn’t mind Russia getting its ass kicked in WWI and millions dying.

Didn't seem to bother the tsar much either. It wasn't the bolshies that went to bat for Serbia.

Wilbeer. Re your response:

But the economy is cranking.

Indeed it is.

And, as a member of the Trump Advisory Board, I have to warn you that the economy, due to Trump's tax cuts & Tariffs, is about to have a very tough turn.

I still claim to be a Republican, but I'm an Eisenhower Republican, not a Trumpian Republican, even if I am on the TRump Advisory board.

@RealTraitortRump will soon be rotting in a jail cell where he belongs, and the economy will continue to grow based on the foundation Obama put in place. Oh, and there will be reasonable regulations on the financial industry as well as clean air and water.

Edit

I can easily see tRump taking a trip to Russia and deciding not to come back, whining about the unfair witch hunt while on display in Putin's trophy room.

Lituya - No need to post that disingenuous tripe. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's own words are so revealing.

Appreciate the sentiment, EdwardT.

My Frankfurt School/Habermas devotee colleagues like to remind me that satire and irony are the highest forms of communication. So, on one hand it's not hard to understand why a liberal like Lennox would fail to see this piece sits at the pinnacle of universal pragmatics. (Still, bias confirmation, he found an alt website that told him it was produced with true intent.) On the other hand, it's the exact same schtick Colbert uses in his Donald Trump comedy. The kind that keeps liberals in stitches.

Let's face it, anyone north of a third-grade education knew that piece was satire the first time they watched it. What's funny, in the case of Ms Cortez, is that the piece portrays her intellectual vacuum accurately, as you point out.

I conclude that Lennox and like-minded libs love being outraged. And when they can't find any fresh--they make it up.

Again, Lituya, she is simply running for Congress and yet probably has 5x times the brain power of the president and yet the Republicans can't lap up his drivel fast enough. Maybe she has a secret 30 day plan to defeat ISIS or best she'll hire "the best people".

Cohen: trump knew about 2016 campaign meeting with Russians.

Let’s face it, Cohen is a slime ball who has his own motives for dropping bombshells, so he isn’t exactly credible.

Nonetheless, consider the pot stirred.

If Lituya’s own smug illusory superiority and bias hadn’t prevented him or her from reading the linked article, he or she would have seen that at least some trumpies believed this interview to be real, and that Colbert identified his own satirical “interviews” with Trump as fake before anyone had to ask.

I do not think all satire necessarily should be labeled as such, but in this era of fake news, and especially with gullible trumpies as an audience, who believe Trump and his proxies’ every lie, it might be a good idea in some cases such as this.

Satire and irony are topics I spent a good deal of time discussing when I was a high school English teacher. At University I had a prolonged period of fascination with the writings of Swift. I do find it outrageous and discouraging that Trump’s own “A Modest Proposal” is a totally unironic method for dealing with, instead of the Irish, the Mexican “problem.”

Trump despises his rank and file supporters, AKA the "base". That's you Lituya. He has zero interest in your station in life. You have nothing that interests him other than perhaps purchasing one of his heinous ties from Bangladesh along with as many ill informed votes you can offer up. He's his own champion, not yours- unless your a Russian sympathizer or a bot.

Riddle me this:
When is it easier to have strong stock market returns:
right after a near-historic stock market crash (caused by a number of complex factors, most notably due to liberal policies encouraging lending to poorly qualified borrowers), or
after a very long (but somewhat muted) bull market?

Well, let's look at the "daddy": 1929

How long did it take the Stock Market to recover?

25 years.

Breaking news, the President doesn't take office in Nov.

This was explained upthread (not just by me), but you're not the only one a little confused so it's probably worth repeating.

The markets shot up after the election because investors believed (correctly as it turns out) that Trump would enact policies that would increase corporate profitability. Markets are predictions about the future, not sentiments about the past. If you don't understand that point, you need to repeat a grade somewhere or other and then come back. (Now there can be some delays that complicate the picture--Obama got a big boost just by being right place right time, whereas everyone blames pool 'ol W just cuz he had the misfortune to be around to hold the bag when the Clinton bubble burst, but that's another story.)

Trump was a longshot, so the markets hadn't priced in his win until it happened. If everyone would have thought Trump would win, there would have been no material change after the election. But in fact there was a huge rise. Just look at at a chart of the Dow (or whatever index) around the time of the election--I suppose you're free to believe it was all a coincidence if you like.

Everyone thought Hills would win, so the markets were continuing in their doldrums until Trump pulled it out, then, WHAMO, the markets caught fire.

I still have hard time understanding why Fritz is so upset UNLESS he had the severe misfortune not to be in equities between Trump's win and now. I truly hope that's not the case, but I don't know, he says he's "mostly" buy and hold, can't discount the possibility that he got worked up by some lib doom and gloomers and panic sold. But otherwise, he should be down on his hand knees at least once a day giving thanks to the glorious market returns we've had since Trump's victory.
